Have you rebooted since setting the resolution in PCC?
[/quote]
Yes- each time I have made a change I have re-booted
Currently things are exactly described in my most recent post
PCC says 1024x768 [I changed it thinking that the on-screen prompt from the monitor buttons were worth trying]
CYD still list the only options as 640x480 and 720x400
On monitor button still says 640x480-- "for best results set to 1024x768"
Thank you for taking the time to work with me

Katie, can you post details of your monitor please?

From your post it appears that you had a much higher resolution previously, so the monitor details would settle that question.

How about some screen shots also. My card is an nVidia, so takes a different driver, but you should be able to see both configuration applications in sync with each other like this.

That setting applies to Windows. For Linux 1280 x1024 @60 wold be more suitable.

That applies to Flat Panels (60 refresh). For CRT's like OP's if you set refresh to less than 85, it causes a sort of flickery appearance and induces headache. I have a 17 inch CRT for my desktop and the best image is at 1024 x 768 @ 85.

That seems to be correct for your graphics card.

...And I have a 17 inch Samsung 790DF CRT who's native resolution is 1280x1024 @60, and that 60 is fixed, with not a flicker in sight.

Katie, can you post details of your monitor please?

From your post it appears that you had a much higher resolution previously, so the monitor details would settle that question.

My monitor is a Dell Model M782p--- according to Dell website the following:
Quote
Horizontal scan range   30 - 85 kHz (automatic)   Vertical scan range  50 - 160 Hz (automatic)
Optimal preset resolution  1024 x 768 at 85 Hz
Highest preset resolution  1280 x 1024 at 75 Hz
Highest addressable resolution*  1600 x 1200 at 65 Hz

I have tried setting it to 1280x1024, but since unable to actually achieve that- I lowered my expectations to 1024x768 and that hasn't worked either.  I figured I'd try to get it to work at lower resolution and play with it if that worked----- but all I seem to get is 640x480 [according to <Configure Your Desktop>  see attached snapshot.

Where I am:  I attempted to make the change in PCC-- it looked like it worked [see snapshot below]
I then rebooted as PCC instructed-- and when system came up, I went into <Configure Your Desktop> and the attached snapshot shows that only two options are available to me there.

Thank you for your help

Try configuring your monitor's resolution through ATI Catalyst Control Center.

Also, can you post the contents of /etc/X11/xorg.conf file?
For the whole world, you are someone.

Katie, ignore the Configure your Desktop settings.

I would suggest using the Configure Your Computer (PCC) as in your picture above.

Change the monitor to generic 1280x1024,
Change the Res to the same setting 1280x1024.

When both have been changed accept the new settings and reboot when instructed.

If you do the above and nothing else, please confirm the settings in PCC immediately after the reboot.

It *should* have retained the new settings, but we need to be sure.

If you have success with that then  better monitor & resolution  settings can be tried.

Quote
Highest preset resolution  1280 x 1024 at 75 Hz
Highest addressable resolution*  1600 x 1200 at 65 Hz

The above indicates there might be some limitations on the highest resolution ....  can you give an indication what the '*' refers to?

EDIT:

Quote
* Addressable means the monitor will sync up to this mode.  However, Dell does not guarantee the image will be sized and centered correctly.
Dell guarantees image size and centering for all preset modes
  which includes 1280x1024

Apparently this is a 15" monitor

Quote
Displaying brilliant images at a maximum resolution of up to 1280x1024 pixels,

Diagonal   382.8 mm (15.07 inches)

Because of the size of the display, and Dell's 'warning', I would not attempt going higher than 1280x1024.

See error message I received from ATI Catalyst Control Center

I tried looking for that file, but only found this folder-- containing several files, but none with that name.

As for the [star--- *] in the resolution listings from the Dell website- here is what they say:
Quote
Highest addressable resolution*    1600 x 1200 at 65 Hz

* Addressable means the monitor will sync up to this mode.  However, Dell does not guarantee the image will be sized and centered correctly.

Thank you to all of you for sticking with this and all your helpful suggestions

From Dell site;

Overview
Thank you for purchasing the DELL M782p 17-inch color monitor. The Dell M782p was designed to accommodate a wide variety of users ranging from home offices to schools and large corporate environments. This monitor incorporates a flat picture tube, which means that glare from ambient lighting is greatly reduced and straight lines look straight from all angles. Displaying brilliant images at a maximum resolution of up to 1280x1024 pixels, this monitor is adept at many applications such as word processing, e-mail, and internet browsing. Those who require exceptional quality and reliability at an affordable price will appreciate the value that the Dell M782p delivers.

Thanks to both--- I did set it back to 1280x1024 before my last post.  Had at one point set it to the lower resolution with thought that it might solve the problem-- which it did not

The installation seems to work fine, except for low resolution-- appreciate all that you do

Katie,

In the PCLinuxOS Control Centre > Hardware > Configure video > Choose a monitor have you set it to your model? M782p? Seems to be listed already. (pardon me for some creative visualisation here)
