Need help to fix "ACPI cannot determine initial brightness"
« on: September 03, 2012, 10:31:22 AM »
Hi all! Trying to boot the latest version, the follo :-\wing message comes up: "[Firmware] ACPI cannot determine initial brightness", however if on the intial grub boot menu F3 (on the kernel option) is pressed and "No Acpi" chosen, the computer boots and I am able to make a fresh install, although every boot the procedure is necessary, otherwise it won't boot. In Linux Mint is enough to add the following line to /etc/default/grub just after "GRUB_OMDLINE_Linux_Default="quiet splash acpi=enable pci=noacpi pci=assign-busse acpi=ht" to make it boot and shut down in a normal way. I would very much appreciate if anyone could help me to sort it out in PCLINUXOS. Thanks a lot for any help.

/boot/grub/menu.lst  is the configuration file for the boot options.

Add  noacpi  (or if that fails acpi=no)  to the boot options ---  you need to be root to do so.

That should ensure it is used on each boot.

Thanks a lot. I will try, however if it will switch off the coolers in the PC?

Thanks

It will be the very same as you entering the option at the boot page.

Unfortunately it did not work, and "Error 11: unrecognized device string" appears and it won' t go any further. Any ideas how to sort it out?

Any help would be appreciated.

Edit the boot line by deleting the option and then booting without it .....

at the grub boot page press Esc, then OK to give a non-graphical list of boot options

highlight the line you would normally boot

Press 'E' to edit it

Highlight the line on which the 'noacpi' was added previously

delete the 'noacpi' entry, hit 'Enter'

Press 'B' to boot

Thanks, It did work, however it won't sort out the permanent booting issue, as it does with extra line in Linux mint.
The hardware temperature in KDE  appears to be around 65 -70 C which is still very high.
Any ideas?

Any help would be appreciated.

Which boot option did you add?
Did you try others?

Where on the boot line in menu.lst did you put the option?

Next time you try an extra boot option please copy & paste the relevant boot lines from menu.lst so we too can see what is done.

Here is the working one  in Linux Mint /etc/default/grub
The extra options ("quiet splash acpi=enable pci=noacpi pci=assign-busse acpi=ht")  have been added after: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=

===========================================
quiet splash acpi=enable pci=noacpi pci=assign-busse acpi=ht

# If you change this file, run 'update-grub' afterwards to update
# /boot/grub/grub.cfg.
# For full documentation of the options in this file, see:
#   info -f grub -n 'Simple configuration'

GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi=enable pci=noacpi pci=assign-busse acpi=ht"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""

# Uncomment to enable BadRAM filtering, modify to suit your needs
# This works with Linux (no patch required) and with any kernel that obtains
# the memory map information from GRUB (GNU Mach, kernel of FreeBSD ...)
#GRUB_BADRAM="0x01234567,0xfefefefe,0x89abcdef,0xefefefef"

# Uncomment to disable graphical terminal (grub-pc only)

In Pclinuxos, /boot/grub/menu.lst

I have tried noacpi, acpi=no, and the same line as in Mint after "quiet nokmsboot vmalloc=256M", and just after " quiet" with the other options ("quiet splash acpi=enable pci=noacpi pci=assign-busse acpi=ht"), however none of them have worked, and prevents the computer to boot.

I would first try the above edited boot stanza in PCLOS.
You should consider creating a new boot stanza for test purposes, leaving the rest untouched, and giving it a title such as TEST Boot

You can then use various combinations of those that work for Mint in that test stanza .....  I have put in two above .....  the others from Mint are  acpi=enable  pci=assign-busse.

I have not had to add boot options to mine for a long time so am not very familiar with them, sorry.
