icons on desktop? (PCOS 2012.08)
« on: September 04, 2012, 03:50:05 PM »
Hi,

Is it possible to have icons for favorites permanently visible on the desktop?  So, when booting up, I could immediately click on, say, Firefox, or Writer?

I think that having to click on the Kicker, then favourites and then on what app you want, is a bit tedious.

Of course it is. Just drag them from the menu, or right-click the menu entry and click "Add to Desktop".

If you are using Desktop View they will be created as widgets. If you are using Folder View they will be added as .desktop files to the directory that Folder View is pointing to, typically ~/Desktop. If you use drag and drop in Folder View you will be asked if you want to copy them or link to them. Choose "Link".

Set unlock widgets or unlock icons, whichever style of desktop you're using. (Right click on a blank spot on the desktop.) Then on the PC MENU, right click the name of the program you want, and select "Add to Desktop." Move the icon or widget wherever you want it, and then set lock widgets or lock icons again. (Right click the desktop.)
If the program you want is not in the PC MENU, you can drag it from Dolphin to the screen. It may have a nice icon, or just a gear wheel, but it will do what you want.

Yes, I forgot to mention that the widgets must be unlocked if you add the icons in Desktop View. They don't in Folder View as they aren't added as widgets there. This is new in KDE 4.8.3.

Thanks for your replies, guys.  It was the unlocking of the widgets that I didn't understand.  In fact I'm not really sure what a widget is but it doesn't matter as my icons are now nicely placed on the desktop.

I must say that this latest version of PCLOS is very good.  Bit like the people who help on the forums..........
