Thanks again, Old-Polack, I think I'm making slow progress.  I deleted the suspect directories from /dev/hdb1 as you directed.  I think I might be back to where I started.  ;)

Upon looking at what was in each individual directory, I noticed a couple of lines out of the #ls -l /here/boot command.  I really don't know what this means, but thought you might look at it and see if it's possible that this might have something to do with the error 15 I got.

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root      20 Sep  2 20:37 config -> config-2.6.26.8.tex3

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root      28 Sep  2 20:37 kernel.h -> /boot/kernel.h-2.6.26.8.tex3
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root    1493 Sep  2 20:37 kernel.h-2.6.26.8.tex3

BTW, I got my 512 MB RAM card and installed it today.  I'm hoping that will help me get up and running when we get this error 15 problem solved.  ;D

Those are normal files to find in /boot and nothing to worry about. What we need to look at next is the menu.lst entries, and a few other things after that. One thing at a time.

[root@localhost ~]# cat /here/boot/grub/menu.lst             <Enter>

Post your results.

Now I want to see what's in the /here/boot directory, as far as the kernel and initrd images are concerned.

[root@localhost guest]# ls -l /here/boot |grep vm                                 <Enter>

The kernel size and date matches mine for the same installation. Your initrd image is slightly smaller, but that's to be expected as they are custom built for the specific machine at installation time. The important thing is that the links exist and point to the right places.

Next, I want to see the fstab file to see how the partitions are being asked to mount.

[root@localhost guest]# cat /here/etc/fstab                             <Enter>

Post your results.

Everything looks good, so it's time to unmount the partition and run the fsck on it; this time with a proper command. ;D

[root@localhost guest]# umount -a                        <Enter>

Note: There is no n following the initial u in the umount command. It is correct as written. You will again see the message about / being busy. That's normal.

[root@localhost guest]# fsck -fy /dev/hdb1                     <Enter>

Post your results.

I just knew we were going to find some nasty crap there. ;D ;D

Just to be safe, while we are at it, How about we run the fsck on the /home partition?

[root@localhost guest]# fsck -fy /dev/hdb6                          <Enter>

Odds are that it's clean, but with loose connections, you can never tell exactly what may have occurred. Better to be overly cautious.  ;)

Now it's fun time again. Time to try booting to the installed system again.

Remember, all the changes made while we worked from the liveCD, like the mount points /here and /there, only existed in memory, so they will be lost. If the system boots up properly, you are good to go. If it still doesn't boot, and you want to backup your personal data from the liveCD, we'll have to do the preliminary creating of directories and mounting the partitions from scratch. No big deal, just a FYI heads up.  ;D

Let us know what happens;D
