Broken Packages while upgrading to KDE 4.8.3

Hi all,

after having upgraded my own laptop to KDE 4.8.3 without trouble, I wanted to upgrade my wife's computer now.

Unfortunately, I ran into some broken packages:

kdenetwork-kppp-provider
kde-utils-ark
kde-utils-filelight
kde-utils-kcharselect
kde-utils-kdf
kde-utils-kfloppy
kde-utils-kgpg
kde-utils-kwallet

Synaptic shows no installed version, only the new version. Is that usual?

I'm lost at this point. Please point me to the next steps.

Unmark these packages if they are not installed. Can you now upgrade without them?

Try to update from the terminal to give more information on what is going on.

Open the terminal.
Log in as root.
run the following two commands and post the output of the last one

apt-get update

apt-get dist-upgrade

ps:
you log in to root's terminal by typing "su" and then pressing "enter" and then entering root's password followed by pressing "enter" again

These packages are installed and I cannot update without them....

In that case, mark them for removal, make a note of any additional packages removed (if it's just a few), upgrade and then install the newer equivalents. If removing one of these wants to take out everything including the kitchen sink stop and come back for more advice.

The installed version is 4.6.5-4pclos2011

It seems I can remove them without losing everything else. But how should I proceed?

Mark all packages to be uninstalled, apply, apply?

I have opened Synaptic and marked the packages to be uninstalled. I have not pressed "Reload". Now, if I hit "mark all upgrades" it will show all the packages to be uninstalled and upgraded.

The solution is already mentioned in this thread, uninstall those packages manually and then update and then install them again.

Hi muungwana,

yep this worked. The description how to remove the packages is not so clear in O-P's thread, so I uninstalled them manually in Synaptic and upgraded.

After rebooting the wallpaper was gone, but everything else was just like before. Perfect!  

Thank you all for helping. Now only one more box to upgrade....
