"I shudder to think about what would happen if I deleted the entire .config/chromium directory and all subdirectories.  bookmarks is not all I would lose."

this was my suggestion

this also contains personal info and plugins/addons afik but nothing you can't write again, depends on you

you could first try to rename the folder from chromium to chromium.bak, chromium should generate new configs

I sometimes get a text page from chrome, but it is a network issue. If the network is very slow, rather than time-out it gives a text version. I can reload & usually page renders ok.
Probably not your issue. But if your problem is intermittent could be a factor.
If you want to run from konsole to check error feed-back the command is; chromium-browser
btw. Maybe I misunderstand, but the text in your original post is in a code box.
If you could take a screenshot and post the image url from tinypic.com etc. It would give a better idea of your error image.

renaming the .config/chromium to .config/chromium-bkup allowed me to retain my settings (as if I know where to find/use them).  The flat rendering problem resolved.  When I logged into google.com, my bookmarks and saved passwords reappeared.

Thanx for your help and patience.

glad to help  :)

"When I logged into google.com, my bookmarks and saved passwords reappeared."

so your bookmarks are saved on your account, not locally, simpler to backup  ;D
