I have tried reinstalling, rebooting, and cannot seem to overcome this problem.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

"I have tried reinstalling, rebooting, and cannot seem to overcome this problem"

that looks like a config error, have you tried deleting the config settings of this web browser?  i don't have it installed because i use opera and firefox so can't say the name of the config

What error messages does it throw up if you execute it from a terminal.

i think your videocard drivers are causing problems

try this: link
otherwise, copy '  Failed to open VDPAU backend libvdpau_nvidia.so ' into google

what version of mplayer you have installed?

to run a app from konsole open konsole and write the name of the app

if that doesn't help, you can verify what specific command is being used by editing the menu and copying the command and then pasting it to the konsole

This is not an mplayer problem, it is a chromium-browser problem.  Searching for the above text and chromium led me to a thread related to adobe flash problems.  I reinstalled flash.  No joy.

mplayer uses vdpau and could give more information about the errors mentioned

what video card do you have?  what driver is using?

I'm running Chromium with no issues, and have for quite a long time now.

Do you have the Nvidia drivers installed on your system?  Since they aren't needed, I'd suggest using Synaptic to remove the video drivers you don't need.  I tend to do this as a matter of course, and since the message you are getting references Nvidia then it would seem to be a reasonable thing to do.

Also, have you turned off hardware acceleration in Flash?  If not, I'd recommend doing that, too.

open youtube, in there open any video

while it is playing, right click on the video/settings

in the first tab, uncheck hardware acceleration

close web browser and reopen it to make settings apply

i ignore if this helps here, i still think that you should delete configs from the browser but save bookmarks first

I cannot do anything in youtube.com from chrome, as it renders only flat text.
I used firefox to change the flash settings.  opened chrome again. no joy.
I shudder to think about what would happen if I deleted the entire .config/chromium directory and all subdirectories.  bookmarks is not all I would lose.
