Live USB Fails To Boot After Updating With Synaptic.
« on: September 02, 2012, 08:27:06 PM »
I have a LiveUSB of my KDE system that I update once a month in Synaptic. This time after updating to KDE 4.8.3 It will not boot boot with persistence.  Non persistence still boots.
It tries to boot, the status bar very slowly (10+ minutes) goes all the way across then just sets there. I can't get into verbose mode. Clicking escape does nothing. I have tried multiple times. There are no options on the boot screen except boot without persistence, with persistence and save to ram.

Any solution for this? Thanks in advance.

After moving your install to 4.8.3 do another remaster for use on the USB drive.

Alternatively use the latest ISO released which has 4.8.3 built in.

It is not exactly clear if you are using a remastered ISO or not. I presumed you are from  "my KDE system"  above.

Doing remasters are almost never successful for me. With a lot of luck I can do a successful one if the install is very new. This install isn't. I have tried a couple of times but they always fail for unknown reasons. Guess I will try again but bottom line I guess I'm screwed. I kind of figured I was. Wish there was still a GUI for remasters because I suck at command line. This was my backup now I have none and as old as this install is it is sure to fail soon. Just hate starting from scratch once a year but I guess I have no alternative. Time to build a new one in VB. As much as I enjoy  computers sometimes it is just very discouraging.

What is it about the USB install that is so important?

Can you not just use the new 2012.08 ISO?
That has 4.8.3 and requires little updating.

Yes and then spend several days tweaking every thing. Trying to remember all the things I have to like the "no blank" script so it doesn't just go black on me. Turning off the the caps lock, getting the fonts the right size, and all the other things I have tweaked that I have forgotten. Trying to remember all my keyboard short cuts I have added  and how I did them. Trying to remember all the little things I did but have now forgotten. Trying to remember the names of programs I have added and used all the time but have forgotten.

Which I am going to do in VB and hopefully I can do it before my current install fails as they always do. My luck though since I have lost my backup my main install will fail beyond all recovery. They usually do after a year and this one is more then a year old. :) The real irony was I was going to make a back up of the USB as soon as I had the spare cash for another flash drive but as is usually my luck it died before I could. If it wasn't for bad luck I wouldn't have any luck.
