Installed without incident.

Checked with two webcams .....  one uvc compliant and one older.
It showed both .....  the older one would only show at the smallest size, trying to go bigger caused the app to crash.

Did a video capture from the uvc camera, but seemed to have no sound.

Trying out various things the app crashed and I could not get it to work again ......  even after removing the webcam and replugging it.

I have not - yet - tried logging out & in or rebooting.
Will try later to see if the app resets itself.

(I do not recall having this happen with the 1.5.2 package)

....  later

Please try executing guvcview from a terminal and tell me if you see this after it crashes:

Code: [Select]
GLib-GIO-ERROR **: Settings schema 'org.gtk.Settings.FileChooser' is not installed
Thanks .....

The problem was the audio sample rate ........  changed it and all OK now.

Will do some more tests.

Audio sample rates of 16000 or below, and above 48000 cause the crash using my uvc compliant webcam.

Using an old webcam

Code: [Select]
ID 046d:08f6 Logitech, Inc. QuickCam Messenger Plus
I can record video at the lowest res of the two normally available from this old cam ...... 160x120 but not 320x240.

I can record audio from the webcam using an audio recording app.

I cannot presently record both with Guvcview ...  it might be a limitation of the webcam?

...  here is what happens ......

Code: [Select]
Checking video mode 160x120@32bpp : OK
Audio frame size is 1152 samples for selected codec
writing header
Pulse audio Thread started
AUDIO: connecting to pulse audio device alsa_input.usb-046d_Camera-01-Camera.analog-mono
         (channels 1 rate 44100)
Could not grab image (select timeout): Resource temporarily unavailable
Could not grab image (select timeout): Resource temporarily unavailable
Could not grab image (select timeout): Resource temporarily unavailable
Could not grab image (select timeout): Resource temporarily unavailable
AUDIO: pulse read thread joined
Floating point exception

I have to play about with the settings to see if I can figure out some that might work.

The problem, as I see it, is not that it will not do some combinations, but that it crashes leaving the user completely at sea as to reason.

Testing continues .......

Ah, that makes me wonder if it's something to do with PulseAudio because, IIRC, the previous guvcview package I built didn't have PulseAudio support. I'm just wondering whether to do a re-build without PulseAudio support?

Being able to record video from the old cam I decided to see if I could record the audio from the uvc cam  instead of the old cams MIC.

The settings allowed it.

It did not crash when recording and appeared to work OK .....  unfortunately there was no sound on the audio track in the saved file  :(

Eventually, by accident rather than design, this worked.

I got an .avi file with video from the old camera and audio from the uvc camera.

It appears that the old camera is causing a problem for Guvcview when trying to use its MIC.

So for main functions this looks like it is good to go.

There are a few things that do not appear to be functioning for me ........

1.  I do not see FPS shown when I tick the box

2.  The Capture Image button does not appear to function

3.  I expected 'tool-tips' to appear when I hovered over the various buttons, but there are none. There is, for instance a "Save" button, which offers to save a "default.gpfl" file .....  but no explanation of what this is.

4. I see no 'Help' menu, so the significance of selecting "Take Picture by Default" or "Take video by Default" is not explained.

5. The VU meter does not appear when that box is ticked.

I have not checked the Audio Effects, but the video filters work.

Extra: For the devs of Guvcview I would like to see the capability of turning off the video (as I can the audio) so that I can record only audio from the source. I realise this is not a concern of the packager  ;)

That's it for the moment.

If you have any tests you would like me to perform please let me know  ;)

regards.

No need ....  PA appears to be working well.
There might be some intermittent problems, but it is more likely IMO to be a problem with the old webcam.

I did one last test ......

recording video with the uvc cam and audio with the old cam .....

the recording appeard to progress OK, but no sound track on the saved video file.

I tried using PortAudio and Pulse Audio with the same results.

So it seems that Guvcview has a problem with this old cam's audio.
I can record audio from the old cam by other means .....  but apparently not with Guvcview.

....  at least it doesn't crash when attempting to record audio only from that cam  :D

I will play about with it some more as time allows and if anything crops up I will post.

EDIT:
I successfully recorded video from the UVC cam and audio from a MIC plugged into the main audio card.
Also recorded video from the old cam and audio from the plugged in MIC.

So the only difficulty I have had is recording sound with Guvcview from the old webcam.

I think that puts everything into perspective.

1.  I do not see FPS shown when I tick the box
I see it here, it's on the Menu Bar.

2.  The Capture Image button does not appear to function
Works for me.

4. I see no 'Help' menu, so the significance of selecting "Take Picture by Default" or "Take video by Default" is not explained.
Those would have to be implemented by the developer.

5. The VU meter does not appear when that box is ticked.
Doesn't appear here either.

That's all for now and thank you very much for putting in the time and taking the trouble to test  :)
