[solved] Install PCLinuxOS on Win 7 host?

I just installed PCLOS 2012.8 in VirtualBox 4. 2 on Windows 7. The only real problem I had was installing Guest Additions. After I got that done it runs beautifully. I have a Dell Inspiron 530 Desktop with 2 CPU's. VirtualBox uses one of the CPU's.

Actually, I was wondering if you're having any similar issues to myself. I can install Guest Additions, but if I do I lose mouse functions. (Using a wireless RAT9 mouse.) It runs beautifully, as does my whole PCLOS guest, until I try and install the guest additions.iso file. Once it installs I lose both scroll wheel, and the side back/forward mouse buttons. To be honest the only reason I try installing the ISO files is the one from the synaptic installer doesn't seem to initiate the common folders function.

I've tried un/reinstalling all synaptic packages that might be involved that I can find, without change. The Xorg.conf folder both before and after installing the ISO has nothing at all indicative of mouse controls or drivers.

Any ideas to solve one or the other of my dilemmas would be appreciated folks.

you could try to force another driver inside the virtual machine, see what driver is working before the guest additions is loaded and what driver later, change it if possible

Not to sound like a noob (I am) but how to I determine which driver is in use? I can see under hardware that my mouse is being designated as Universal  Any PS/2 USB mouse when it's functioning correctly and after the ISO install.

i was expecting that a driver was installed, but if you see that driver loaded, then, probably it is not loading a special driver with the guest additions iso for the mouse

That's the dilemma, as I can't see any change of driver being loaded in the xorg.conf file either. I'll try digging through the log file and see what I can come up with. Thanks for the help.

Edit: Any ideas how to come at it the other way? ie) How to enable the common folders with the default guest additions package in the synaptic?

the driver inside the virtual machine is not related to what xorg has in it, the virtual machine just has what is loaded and offered by virtualbox

the guest additions are for the virtual machine only and operates inside the virtual machine allowing interaction with virtualbox and then with the os

common folders?  the guest additions is just a iso file containing a couple folders with a windows installer, if you load it with ark or another tool that lets you see the contents of the iso you can copy whatever it is inside it

I'm running PCLOS XFCE in VirtualBox on Windows 7, and it's always been nice and smooth.

About installing Guest Additions - how exactly are you trying to do this?  The Virtualbox client in Windows should download them for you, and then you should choose "Install Guest Additions" from the Devices menu in the virtual machine.  Should be in the top left of the screen.

This will mount the guest additions as a virtual CD, and you need to open it and run the installer as root from there.  It will launch an installer script and install the guest additions.

I have no issues installing it, just issues once it's installed.

Is this 'guest additions' the correct one for the version of VBox you are using?
I understood they are a 'matched pair' .....  and have been named something different in recent versions.

Base, linux 2.6 and linux type I'm using "other".

Just a thought - is there any need to use "other" ?

One of my 32bit VM's is set like the screenshot (if it was a 64bit Linux OS, the Version field would be Linux 2.6 (64bit)




Another thing that can hinder the boot process is whether the Enable IO APIC (System field) is turned on or off.
