Have checked, the Shockwave version is correct.  I have pruned all the Java 1.5.xx files. They were installed from way back, and if they were not needed, I would have thought
that the Synaptic upgrade would have removed them  Anyway, they're de-installed now.  It looks like the jre 7U7 is the file that Firefox wants, and now has.
To answer the sound questions:  I am not using PulseAudio. Every time I tried to use P/A, I wound up with no sound and a very difficult time to get it back. Using Alsa.
I am using the heanet repo, and have been for quite some time now.  I have two sound detectors in the system. Intel, on the MOBO, and NVidia on a GeForce 502 board, that
has HDMI output.  This HDMI works in XP fine, but has never made a peep in Linux. I have had several threads here and elsewhere to try and make it work, but it never has.
The mobo sound works on Internet radio --KSEY, in Seymore, TX, for classic-style Country music plays thru RealPlayer into my local Logitech sound system.  Up until the
Java problem and me trying to solve it, YouTube played locally also, but now it doesn't play anywhere from PCLOS on this machine.

I'm sorry dougmack Java7u7 (Java SE)is not the required package.
"Unless you firstly have Java Runtime Environment installed, and wish to Develop Java Programs."

You may have miss spelt what you posted, however we must post the correct info, it's confusing enough as it is.  ;)
The required java update is JavaRE 1.6.0.35-1pclos2012, which is in the PCLinuxOS Repos now.
You'd have to manually install Java7u7 (Java SE), it is not in the PCLinuxOS Repos.

Java SE Runtime Environment 7 Downloads
"What Java Do I Need?" You must have a copy of the JRE (Java Runtime Environment) on your system to run Java applications and applets.

To develop Java applications and applets, you need the JDK (Java Development Kit), which includes the JRE
Do you want to run JavaTM programs, or do you want to develop Java programs?
If you want to run Java programs, but not develop them, download the Java Runtime Environment, or JRETM.

The required java update is JavaRE 1.6.0.35-1pclos2012, which is in the PCLinuxOS Repos now.

You are correct--both Firefox and Thunderbird in PCLOS have Java 1.6.0_35 add-on.  Sorry, I got confused with Windows, that also needed to be updated.  Windows has the 7u7 update.
I have been going around in circles with the PCs for the last week or so and my head is spinning!
