Well, I appreciate that advice but I am still unable to get the desktop to do almost anything. wheather in desktop view or folder view. It won't let me have a wallpaper and I have no widgets and I have no logoff or logon sound.

I am unaware of anything I might have done to screw this up. I upgraded and then everything was corrupt.

Thank you.

Have you checked to see if any KDE 4.6.5 packages remained installed? If so remove them with Synaptic and install the equivalent 4.8.3 packages.

Well here is a new twist. Synaptic will now no longer open. I just had it opened about an hour ago.

From a liveCD, as root, run a fsck -fy command on your / partition.

It came back after a reboot. Now I will do as you just suggested about checking the KDE leftovers.

I'd still do the fsck from a liveCD. It may find a problem, it may not, but it won't hurt anything either.

OK will do. I just checked for leftover KDE 4.6.5 . Nothing leftover.
Live cd next. Thank you.

No problems found with live cd.

I have now managed to get the wallpaper to stay and have recovered some icons. It is a very strange thing.
The show desktop icon is no where to be found and many of the widgets have disappeared. Not all of that is a big deal.  A lot of that I can live without. However, I really would like to know what happened.

I am not sure the log off and log off missing sound is related to the other problem but it did occur at the same time.

So for now I am going to take a break and live with this. I spent a lot of this holiday working on it. I will get back to it when I can.

Thanks to all those that pitched in to help.
