No one else have any ideas? I am floundering out here. Thank you in advance.

Maybe I will trash it and install the last release.  :-\

But do you have the hidden folder .kde4.bak in your home directory?

All .RestoreMyKDEdesktop desktop does is rename ~/.kde4 to ~/.kde4.new and after that ~/.kde4.bak to ~/.kde4 (after checking that both .kde4 and .kde4.bak exist and removing any old .kde4.new).

You can do it yourself with the command
Code: [Select]
mv ~/.kde4 ~/.kde4.new && mv ~/.kde4.bak ~/.kde4if ~/.kde4.bak exists, that is. Then log out and in again.

Thanks for trying Bald Brick, but that actually made it worse.  :-\

I lost more things on the task bar and other things are missing.

I'm sorry for that. But did ~/.kde4.bak exist? (After you've run the command it won't, but before?)

Yes it did. Anyway to reverse that? And don't be sorry, you were trying to help.

Luckily the command saved your old .kde4 as .kde4.new, so you just have to replace your current .kde4 with .kde4.new, or in other words you have to do the opposite of what you just did:

Code: [Select]
mv ~/.kde4 ~/.kde4.bak && mv ~/.kde4.new ~/.kde4
Then you'll even get your .kde.bak back, although I don't think you'll find much use for it as it made everything worse.

Thanks that did it. It is back the way it was. Still broken, but the original broken.

It is always frustrating when something goes wrong with PCLinuxOS. We get so used to it just working right all the time, it is a surprise when it doesn't.

From your current situation, set up the desktop as you wish it to be. When done, and you are satisfied with the look and feel. copy your ~/.kde4 to ~/.my-kde4 with the command;

[prompt ~]$ cp -a .kde4 .my-kde4                           <Enter>

You now have a backup with a different name than .kde4.bak. If your desktop becomes corrupted again, use the cp -a command to copy, not move, ~/.my-kde4 to ~/.kde4

Of what use be there for joy, if not for the sharing thereof?

Well, I appreciate that advice but I am still unable to get the desktop to do almost anything. whether in desktop view or folder view. It won't let me have a wallpaper and I have no widgets and I have no logoff or logon sound.

I am unaware of anything I might have done to screw this up. I upgraded and then everything was corrupt.

Thank you.

Have you tried creating a 'test' user account to see if the desktop can be set up there?

Have you checked to see if any KDE 4.6.5 packages remained installed? If so remove them with Synaptic and install the equivalent 4.8.3 packages.

That is a good point. I had mulled that over in my mind earlier in the day. I had not acted on it. Perhaps that would be a way to uncover more information on what happened. Thank you.

Well here is a new twist. Synaptic will now no longer open. I just had it opened about an hour ago.
