KDE Upgrade Problems
« on: August 28, 2012, 03:41:30 PM »
When upgrading one of my computers with synaptic. I encountered multiple problems with the KDE upgrade. Could someone point me to the right threads that might help me. I found several threads on the subject but they didn't cover some of my issues. I did a search and couldn't find some of the problems. I can fix some of the problems on my own so I won't list them all here. JUst need a shove in the right direction as I assume they have all been covered in other threads.

Thank you in advance.

The first requirement is that you have the right amount of bananas and bacon installed.  ;D

I did see that thread but it didn't work. I didn't have an icon that said  RestoreMyKDEdesktop. I lost my wallpaper.
The cashew up in the corner said new activity and no way to get rid of it. There are no widgets in the widget bar.
The icon that I had that said show desktop had a red x through it and it said that that widget didn't exist. Also the login sound and logout sound are gone. Also their were 2 colored dots on task bar where the show desktop icon used to be which is the activity manager that was not there before.

I can run around and fix all these things bit by bit but if there is an easier solution, I will take it.

Thank you for listening.

If you have Desktop mode enabled instead of Folder View, you will not see the RestoreMyKDEdesktop icon, unless you navigate to ~/Desktop, where it should show up, if it's been installed. Left click on it and follow directions.

I also lost the Show Desktop widget, although as I never made use of it, it was no great loss, but in consequence I didn't search the Forum and get the reference to kde-plasma-addons.  However, one favourite widget, the Fuzzy Clock also vanished, and searching 'fuzzy' and 'clock' in Synaptic and the Forum didn't locate any relevant results.  Panel Options/Add Widgets listed a (different) 'Fuzzy Clock (Javascript)', but this crashed with a Javascript error on dragging it to the desktop.  Eventually, through discussion on the kde.org support forum, I found out about kde-plasma-addons, installed it and was reunited with my old friend.

Obviously this isn't a universe-shattering problem, but if the description of kde-plasma-addons in Synaptic had included a list of the contents, my original Synaptic search would have given the information I needed at a much earlier time.  Some portmanteau packages do have this sort of list, and I wonder if it might be done more regularly to provide a better search facility in future?

BTW, congratulations to all who stitched the KDE upgrade to 4.8.3 into the normal Synaptic upgrade framework.  In my case it ran like a dream and the forum provided all (well, nearly all!) the aid I needed to get everything running smoothly.

The description you ask are usually just copied and paste from the website that provided them. If the website for the downloaded tarballs provides a list, it would go to the description. If none is provided, well that's just too bad. As much as we might be able to do it ourselves, we might misinterpret and write an entirely different description and there's no way of making everybody happy.

Open Dolphin, then View --> Show Hidden Files... if you installed the version of kde4-config that upset your personal desktop settings, the script the icon pointed to should be there.

But the chimp with the alias "Potato Creek Jack" did point out a real shortcoming of how RestoreMyKDEdesktop was installed.

That the script itself is a hidden file in ones home directory is understandable if non-standard.

But simply placing the .desktop file that starts it in ~/Desktop was slightly less than clever. Even if a Folder View desktop pointing at ~/Desktop is what a majority of users have chosen (or have quietly accepted) there are lots of other users that don't like folder view, and even if they do, their folder view may not be set to show the contents of ~/Desktop. (On most of my installs I don't use folder view; on my 32 bit test install I do, but my folder views are not pointed at ~/Desktop but at ~/Skrivbord1, ~/Skrivbord2 and ~/Skrivbord3.)

That said, anybody on the forum should by now know what RestoreMyKDEdesktop actually does, and if they don't find the icon on their desktop they might try doing it themselves....  ;D ;D ;D ;D

P.S. What do you use the potatoes for, Joe? I'm told bananas are better for making moonshine.

That is a negative. It is not there. Thank you for trying though.
