[Answered] kde4-config - again.....
« on: August 27, 2012, 02:06:30 PM »
Hi guys,

I updated to KDE 4.8.3 a few days ago, screwed up a little and had to redo my desktop configurations. Well, no prob.

A day later, I updated and kde4-config was updated. Again, my settings were gone. And
Code: [Select]
mv -r .kde4.bak .kde4 didn't help. So I had to do it again....  :-\

Now I just checked Synaptic, there's kde4-config lurking again  ::) ::) ::) ::)

Should I update or should I just pin it until 4.9 is out the door?

The latest kde4-config doesn't change your default kde 4.8.3 desktop settings  :)

Did it updated also on my install!

Both kde4-config and kde4-config-legacy have been rebuilt with a new installation application that no longer affects the existing users desktop, only the /etc/skel/.kde4 where the information is used to setup new users. The new 2012.08 images use kde4-config-legacy, which uses the configurations as set up by Texstar when we first switched to kde4, and the kde4-config uses the configurations as they were in the TR images. You can choose either package, depending on you own personal likes. Installing either will automatically uninstall the other package if it is present.

Of what use be there for joy, if not for the sharing thereof?

Thank you John_57 and Old-Polack.

So I can safely install kde4-config without losing my desktop settings again? Last time I think the change was because of the changed default wallpaper. Now if nothing is changed in my desktop settings that will be fine.

Now the problem is reverse !
I were good with the kde4-config to change settings (i changed settings manually), now i update a notebook from the spring of this year and i don't see the changes of kde 4.8 and i can't set new settings.
I tried to remove kde4-config and reinstalled but it doesn't works.
I installed kde4-config-legacy and it is like kde4-config.
Now i installed kde4-config but i can't set the new settings.
The kde panel is like it were 6 o 7 months ago  :(
Now what can i change to new settings ?
If i create new user it works but i don't want delete old user and to use another user.
Bye

If you want new settings, then log out,log in to root's account, browse to your home folder and then delete the ".kde" folder and then log back in to your account.

Or, a less safer way, while on your account, delete ".kde" folder, log out and then log back in and you should see default desktop.

Guess it is the ".kde4" folder?
Removing this folder you get the default settings from the KDE development team after login out/in (desktop reboot)

I tried this !
I create a temporary folder and i moved kde4 folder there, but when i login in my account i found a kde different from all.
I think it is kde classic and no pclinuxos customized.
What can i get new settings of pclinuxos ?

where did the "kde4-config" package get its default pclinuxos setting from?

I assume its "/etc/skel/.kde4".

Normal user can not enter the folder, so i assume you will have to log in to root in one way or another and then copy and paste the folder over.

What can i get new settings of pclinuxos ?

If I recall correctly you need:

Code: [Select]
cp -af /etc/skel/.kde4/* /home/user/.kde4
cp -af /etc/skel/.local/* /home/user/.local
cp -af /etc/skel/Desktop/* /home/user/Desktop
(and make sure ownership and permissions are set correctly)
