« on: August 27, 2012, 01:14:49 AM »
Hi,

Tried to boot PCLOS 2012 LiveCD on two separate machines and each time I got KDE Crash message.

Just wondering whether others have experienced similar problems with the latest version.

Thanks

Yes it happens on that LiveCD ......  but recovers immediately and nothing negative results from it (other than the user wondering what happened).

I suppose you both mean; PCLOS 2012.08, and  KDE 4.8.3 ?

Actually considering PCLinuxOS KDE 2012.08 is a DVD size, I'm not at all sure what pclos Distro is the subject of your discussion.

Well I was referring to the kde-2012.08 release ........  and as I don't normally use optical media I have never broken the habit of referring to LiveCD.

That's what I thought initially but when I completed the installation I noticed at least on one occasion when firefox simply froze and I am sure there was some other app that played up as well.

Sorry Just18; and thankyou for the Live USB software ( I think you made that ? )

Yes, if things aren't refered to by their specific version no.'s I go a bit weird. Hangover of being a Technician suppose.

gdesilva, I found running Firefox on a 'LiveUSB' caused some memory shortfalls; probably my lack of memory.
However once installed have had no freeze ups.

The machine I was trying out 2012.08 on had 2GB of RAM so it is unlikely that the lack of memory was an issue in my particular case. I was trying to install Linux on a friends computer (migrating from Vista!) and in the end I had to settle for Mint - since I do not have the PC with me any more, unfortunately it is not possible to see whether I can replicate the problem although I get the KDE crash report even on the PC I am using now. The purpose of the post was to alert the developers. Thanks for your responses.

Hi,

Tried to boot PCLOS 2012 LiveCD on two separate machines and each time I got KDE Crash message.

Just wondering whether others have experienced similar problems with the latest version.

Thanks

I have PCLinuxOS 2012.08 installed on an Acer Extensa 5620-6419 (purchased in 2008). The computer has the standard configuration with the Intel Core 2 Duo processor T5550 and 3 GB of RAM.

KDE, as well as everything else, works fine EXCEPT for the following:

Whenever I try to shut down the computer, either using the Leave icon in the menu (lower left hand corner) or the Logout/Shutdown widget I installed in the lower panel, KDE immediately crashes. It quickly recovers but then the computer attempts to restart (taking me to the login screen and asking for my password). I have to click on the shutdown icon below (one the login screen) to actually shut down the computer.

If I do attempt to restart the computer and shut down normally, most often (but not always) KDE crashes again.

Is this common? Does anyone know why this happens? Does it happen to others? It is not a major problem but it IS an annoyance.

Thanks for any help.

Lawrence

I have determined (apparently) that this KDE crashing occurs after I have run BleachBit Root and BleachBit. Evidently there is some bug in these cleaning programs which causes this. Does anyone else have the same problem?

Yes, if I check all the 'System' boxes. The KDE Desktop always pulls itself back together fairly quickly though, after a few 'Report this Bug' messages.

So, I only "Deep Clean" with Bleachbit when about to do a Remaster. It must delete some active files I suppose to create this unmelcome event.

Lawrence, you may want to check your 'Plymouth Theme', i.e. change to another and see if you have the same problem. Awhile back I was using Blue Dobie Plymouth Theme, and it was taking me into a commandline Login: type, situation when trying to - Logout.
There's a prog EZswitch to simply change from one Theme to another.

Dear Abraxas,

I just installed EZSwitch. The Plymouth Theme I have installed on my computer is Default Plymouth Theme for PCLinuxOS 2010. Can you recommend another one in which I might not have this 'crashing' problem? I do wish to run both BleachBits after every session just before shutdown.

As I said, this is certainly not a major problem, just a minor annoyance.

Thanks very much for your suggestion and I look forward to receiving your recommendation for a different Plymouth Theme I can use.

I can't recommend a Theme Lawrence. But look in Synaptic, "Plymouth Theme", and try a couple of the latter (2012) Themes, is a good place to start now you have EZSwitch.

From memory, as I use the Blue Dobie Theme, I copied the directory from before the KDE update, from a Backup, and replaced the 'Blue Dobie' theme Directory. It was just good luck. I wouldn't suggest doing that; a lot has changed in KDE. I can't remember exactly, but after doing so logging In, and Out was not taking me to a verbose page with a command prompt.

Personally I wouldn't run "both BleachBits after every session just before shutdown."
Why do you ?
It could be causing the odd behaviour you're experiencing. I only clean Firefox from the Normal User Bleachbit.
I have no trouble afterwards.
You can 'Preview' what will be deleted in Bleachbit also, which may give a clue to what files are causing instability.
1.) Install some NEW full Plymouth Themes and see if that fixes the Logging in and out.
2.) Try NOT cleaning with Bleachbit for a few sessions.

I'm no expert, it's just trial and error from my end  ;)

I also confirm the bug of BleachBit.

...You can 'Preview' what will be deleted in Bleachbit also, which may give a clue to what files are causing instability.

Most likely, the reason for this is to remove the folder /tmp/kdecache-'username' (or deleting some files from this folder).
Try to find and remove the appropriate checkbox in the settings of BleachBit.

MIB Ossigeno Plymouth theme works well for me.

Never heard of it, could you include some further info; i.e., is MIB a popular movie  ;), and is the Theme in the PCLinuxOS Repos ?

Kindest of Regards,
