since you are new to kde4, you should use it as a new environment, similar to old kde but with many differences, slowly and accepting that kde4 is not kde3, the desktop has changed
as plan b, most users keep lxde to have a environment similar to kde3, possibly a good option for you while you get used to the way of kde4 or if you don't really like it adopt it as your new desktop
i find kde4 what is normal, what should be a desktop, but i have used it since october 2009 and as i said, i use it the way i used kde3, very different to others but in the way i use kde4
