No Sound with ALI M5455 - Solved
« on: August 26, 2012, 10:24:47 AM »
I have just upgraded to KDE4 and have no sound.

I have been debating whether to go for LXDE or KDE4, I did appear to have sound working under LXDE. In the end I went for KDE4 as I have been previously using KDE3 as I am use to the software packages.

Also during start up I have noticed that something like "ALI - Unsupported device" flashes on the screen.

I have tried the other four suggested Alsa/Oss drivers but nothing appears to work.

Any ideas or am I stuck with no sound.

I see I have drivers for  ali5451   here but not   ali5455   it seems

I do not know if the 5451 driver will work for your hardware.

In a terminal, as root, do the following command

alsaconf

and see if it sets up the sound.

After trawling the internet it seems that this was a common problem with the ALIM5455. It was a shame really as this ABIT UL8 Athlon 64 socket 939 was a better motherboard than I am presently using, I was planing to keep my original system until I was happy to change over. I did fined another issue in that if you shut down it did a reboot instead.

So in the end I took the easy option and installed another hard drive and installed LXDE on my current PC and now dual boot with KDE3.5. :)

"I did fined another issue in that if you shut down it did a reboot instead"

i haven't found a similar problem in amd platform, only on old intel mainboards

you could try verifying if there is a bios update and also if you have another sound card to replace that one, could work

about kde 3, is it your pc old?  mine is 6+ years old and works very well with kde4 but i have 1 gb of ram
