[SOLVED] Icon-Only Task Manager
« on: August 25, 2012, 01:54:54 AM »
I've been using this task manager in preference to Smooth Tasks for quite some time and I absolutely love it  :)

Now for the bad news:
I currently have eight launchers, seven of which work perfectly, one of which doesn't work at all. The one which doesn't work is Configure Your Computer, more commonly known as PCC. I click on the launcher and nothing whatsoever happens and if I hover my mouse cursor over the launcher, it says perl, whereas it should say Configure Your Computer. The only relevant difference I can see between the launcher that doesn't work and those that do, is that it's a Perl script and the others are binaries.

Thoughts anyone?

Delete the broken launcher and replace it with a working one.

Thanks but Icon-Only Task Manager doesn't work like that.

Delete the broken launcher and replace it with a working one.

Deleted the launcher, fired up PCC, right-clicked on its icon in the panel and clicked on Show a Launcher When Not Running. Exited PCC and then clicked on the new launcher ..... nothing happens.

Ah!  Now I see what launcher you were referring to.

I did that here and get the same result .........  "perl"

So whatever is wrong is not only on your PC.

Thanks for confirming that  :)

The question now is, is this a PCLOS problem or an upstream problem.

Install   Icon-Only Task Manager    on a panel.
Launch PCC
right-click on its icon in the Icon-Only Task Manager  panel
click on Show a Launcher When Not Running
exit PCC
click on the new launcher

and see what happens ......  nothing for us two ......  and hovering on the launcher shows  'perl'  and not what it should.

Do the same with another app and compare the results.

I'm not sure why this is so but I found a really stupid workaround.

First, run PCC then right-click on Icon-Only Task Manager and open its Settings. Go to Launcher Matching Rules, click Add. For Laucher, click the Browse icon and More Applications > Configuration Configure Your Computer.

Next, open another instance of PCC. Click Detect Window Properties on the settings dialog and click on the second PCC window. You should get Drakconf.real/drakconf.real on Window Class/Window Name. Click OK. Close the original PCC. Click Show A Launcher When Not Running. Close the other PCC.

From that, I got this. Tried it and it launches PCC. I don't know if this will work after a reboot though.

Please check.

plasma-applet-icontasks installs okay from Synaptic but when I add it to the panel I get the dreaded red cross.

If just one or two apps need "launching" the plasma-applet-launchbutton applet can do that.

It creates one "launch icon" the command (say drakconf) is added to it along with an icon of choice.

I found it best to drop it on the desktop - add the command and icon, resize it to match the size of a panel icon and then drag it onto the panel.

The downside is -depending on which icon is added - the icon may be surrounded by a while background

Tried it ......  still got the 'perl' and no launch .......  but I might have mixed up the two PCC instances  :(

EDIT:
I deleted that launcher and launched PCC again and ticked 'create a launcher' and it is working presently

Survived a reboot.

Yep, exactly the same happened here but it's now definitely working and it does survive a reboot.
Thanks everyone and I'll mark this as solved.

All I need to figure out now is how to bring my mobile phone back to life after dropping it down the toilet  :o
