KDE 4.8.3 boot problem
« on: August 24, 2012, 12:47:31 PM »
Second post on this.

Last night I booted up and noticed that I was running/using 800 meg of memory, nothing else running a I just booted. Waited for it to drop and it didn't. So I logged out and logged back in, same thing. Brought up system monitor and it LOOKED like X was the culprit, and yea I know should have taken a a screen shot. So I installed htop, hopefully it might do it again so I can get a screen shot.

But anyone have any ideas?

TKS!

Don't worry. Memory won't necessarily be freed in Linux unless it's needed by other processes. This makes the system faster when whatever happens to be in RAM is needed again. And if another app needs the RAM, it will get it.

running/using 800 meg of memory

Does it stay at approx 800MB or drop off after a while.

If you bring up the System Activity window and sort on the memory column what does it show apart from  X.

Just spotted BB's post - if you open another application (whilst the System Activity window is still open) does it release your memory and "hand it over" to the newly opened app - may need to wait a mo'.

Here's mine with a few applications opened

PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.1; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.2.18bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver

Sony Vaio SVE1513A4ESI Laptop, Intel Core i5, 2.6GHz, 6GB RAM, 750GB, 15.6" Intel HD Graphics 4000

But 800 meg, only have 1024, and it's never done this before, on any of the GUI's I've used... With the exception of the CPU being pegged once while running LXDE..

And it was not coming down, even after running system monitor...

Like I said, wish I would have screenshot it, I was just blown away that it was using so much ram, and was thinking that might have been the reason it hung at the splash screen and was chugging on the drive..

If memory isn't being used for anything else, and the kernel doesn't anticipate a present need, it will use all available memory to cache disk access, making the system faster...if it needs it, it'll dump it in favour of programs requesting it (it's just data that was on the disk, anyway...it's not lost).

Linux is very good with it's memory management.  If you're not seeing any performance issues, I wouldn't worry about it.

KDE and LXDE RAM requirements are very different. KDE is a fully-featured DE with loads of daemons for a whole lot of things. If a user's machine experiences performance decrease due to hardware (especially RAM), it would be better to use LXDE instead which uses much less. But there's always a trade-off.

Pags and Archie your missing the point...

Normally when I start up I'm using 190-200 meg for running services, NOT 800 meg, where it was PEGGED, maybe went down 30 meg worth, not very much.. I understand KDE and LXDE are different, I was just saying that in LXDE at one time I had a problem with the CPU being pegged at 100%...

And I understand that Linux uses  memory in a different way, but it normally don't load it up on startup, or at least not on this lappy...

TKS all!

If it is not repeatable I wouldn't worry about it.

Tonight I had a real weird one ......  logging in to the desktop took ages ......  and when I got there X was using 1.9GB .....  yep ...   of the 4GB installed.

Logging out and in again fixed that and I haven't seen anything like it since.

It is probably related to akonadi, nepomuk, or strigi. I personally don't want or need this stuff as part of my desktop environment. They should be seperate, stand alone, de agnostic programs. imho ;)

You can try turning off unnecessary running services.

Thats about what I'm getting here, I've had abt 3-4 times that it's not made it past the splash screen and the one time that it did I was using what i would consider a boatload of memory. Logging out did not solve it, but booting into safe mode, typing exit and hitting enter and it came up normally.

Next stupid question would be which kernel, still using 26.38.8? Been wondering if a kernel switch might be in order...

EDIT:

Are you using the Calgary mirror? I've been hitting it for over a week with no updates, I switched mirrors today to one in OZ, got a boatload of updates. So switched to another mirror and got the same list...

Tonight I had a real weird one ......  logging in to the desktop took ages ......  and when I got there X was using 1.9GB .....  yep ...   of the 4GB installed.

Logging out and in again fixed that and I haven't seen anything like it since.

Putting this out here again, it's not done it since the last post untill a couple of days ago an then again yesterday.

I waited till I got logged in on the first time, and it looked maybe like plasma turned off, I had a black patch behind conky and my panel was black. Logged out and logged back in and everything was perfect. Second time had no wallpaper, no conky and finally shut it down and re-booted. Came up fine on second boot.

Anybody have any ideas on what keeps glitching this poor thing?

TKS ALL!
