Problem with newest dkms-broadcom-wl (Solved)
« on: August 23, 2012, 09:11:57 PM »
Hi everyone,
I started using PCLinuxOS recently, and I can say I love it. Everything worked out of the box, even the wireless, which hadn't happened with other distros.
I've read a bunch of topics about this, however none of them seems to solve my problem. So... here it goes.
I'm a happy owner (?) of a Broadcom BCM4311 wireless controller which, as I said before, worked right out of the box. But, after upgrading the system, it stopped (kernel 3.2.18-pclos2.pae.bfs & latest dkms-broadcom-wl).
lspci displays: 01:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN (rev 01)

Possible solutions that I've tried so far:
- Installing latest dkms-broadcom-wl and removing the 'b43' files showing up on Synaptic.
- Uninstalling dkms-broadcom-wl and keeping 'b43' files (after modprobe 43, wlan0 seems to be up, even connects to my wi-fi signal, but Firefox doesn't seem to like it, or any program using internet).

With kernel 2.6.38.8 and dkms-broadcom-wl 5.60.48.36 it worked like a charm.

Anyways, I'd like to know if anyone could tell me how could I get my wireless to work again, keeping the latest kernel and system files.
Thanks in advance!

I forgot to say that in Network Center, when trying to connect to a wifi network, it says: unable to find network interface for selected device (using wl driver)

Ok, I finally got my wireless working! Even though, not with the dkms-broadcom-wl.

To summarize:
* Wireless adapter: Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN (rev 01)
* Kernel: 3.2.18-pclos2.pae.bfs

Solution:
From Synaptic, REMOVE:
* dkms-broadcom-wl
* bcm43xx-firmware
* bcm43xx-fwcutter

Then, again in Synaptic, INSTALL:
* b43-firmware
* b43-fwcutter

The led that displays the status of my wifi inmediately turned blue, and now I'm posting on here using the wireless!
Hope it helps anyone.

Thanks Archie. Actually, that was the post that moved me to try that alternative (that, and also my experience with the wireless in *buntus). However, it didn't seem to work the first time (I guess I didn't do it the right way).
Anyways, wireless still working...
