I was looking for a solution to the "Malformed URL trash:/" error message that appears when clicking the Trash icon issue but the only thread I can find is here: http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,80736.0.html

As you can see that thread was started in KDE 4.5.2 and continues to be an issue (at least for me) in 4.8.3.

On other sites I found that the old (KDE 3) solution was to delete the trash folder and create a new one.
Then people started deleting the .dcop folder.
Then KDE 4 replaced dcop with dcup and that didn't work anymore.
Some people have replaced the mime folder with a copy from a know good profile.
None of that has worked for me.

Has anyone here come up with a solution yet?

What Trash icon are you clicking?
The Trash icon in the Dolphin sidebar works for me.
If you are having trouble with the Trash widget, try Dolphin before doing anything drastic.  ;D

The problem is with the desktop widget.  The Dolphin sidebar works fine.  I can drop stuff onto the widget and "open with" Dolphin, but clicking on the widget gives the error.

Tried the widget I see what you mean. That was on a desktop in Desktop mode.
When I switched to Folder mode it performed fine. Dropped ffrom Dolphin & from the desktop & no error.
Seems it is designed for Folder mode desktop.
Just a short test. maybe not conclusive.

The Trash can widget on my desktop works for me as well. Clicking on the icon opens Dolphin to trash:/

I use Desktop mode and the widget works fine .....  opens Dolphin at  trash:/

In KDE CC - Workspace Appearance & Behaviour - Default Applications .......  File Manager ......  what file manager is selected as default?

If I choose PCManFM and not Dolphin or Konqueror I get the reported error.

The file manager was set to "Home".  I changed it to Dolphin but no difference - do I need to log out & back in?

Excuse the question ....  but are you sure you changed the correct setting?

Only reason I ask is that I have a list under Default Component ......  and considering it is intended to launch an application I would question how Home got in that list ........  so just checking that you edited the correct list  ;)

I would log out/reboot to see if it makes any difference.

Prior to 4.8.3 I had an "Open with Home" option when I right clicked on the widget.  I was using that until it disappeared with the 4.8.3 update, thus the renewed interest in resolving the malformed URL problem.

This is getting really confusing. "Home" is not a file manager.

It may be shorthand for your home directory, /home/<yourname>, but that is decidedly not the URL you want to open when you click your trashcan. You'd want to see your trash directories in a file manager. (The most important one is ~/.local/share/Trash/files/, but using the URL trash:/ will show you them all.)

Rename your ~/.local to ~/.local_bak
Then logout and back in

+1

So how did it get in the list of file managers as a choice?

Weird!  Never seen it happen here.

Bald Brick:  I don't know how it got there, but it opened Dolphin so I used it.

old_guy:  Renaming .local & restarting solved the issue.

Thank you all very much!

Quick update:

Installed the latest updates yesterday.  Apparently KDE4_config was one of them.  Trash widget is back to Malformed URL.   >:(

Oh well.  Right click, Open with... works.

Still beats the heck out of Windoze!   ;D
