Migrate Thunderbird settings
« on: August 22, 2012, 01:33:18 PM »
I'd like to migrate two of Thunderbird's settings to (a) another pclos, and (b) Windows.  The settings are the contact list--collected addresses, and the filters list.  The instructions that Mozilla supplies for
filters do not seem to apply to Linux--they mention two files, one of which does not exist, and the other exists as 4 or 5 files scattered thru different directories.  (Files: msgFilterRules.dat and user.js.)
Anyone know how?  thanx--doug

Doug,

I use portable on both win and Linux, mostly Linux under wine. I wanted to migrate email back and forth between Linux Thunderbird and portable, but win uses CTL + LF and Linux only uses LF in the textfiles.

You might be able to do it but you'd have to hand edit the files to accommodate the differences..

The simplest way is to go to your address book, then Tools/Export.  Take the resulting file to the other machine and go to address book then Tools/Import.  That takes care of the contacts.  I've done it a few times.

Can't offer much help on the filters, specifically, but I have also had the most satisfying results from just copying the entire contents only of the profile to the profile on another machine.  That gets everything - contacts, filters, email, folders, etc.

Hi,

What I find works best is to sync everything through a gmail account. I sync thunderbird, my iphone, mail.app, etc etc. Everything propogates through and I can access my contacts anywhere... just my 2 cents..
