The old Gimp 2.6 could import SVG files. I used to make a complex drawing in Inkscape and then import to Gimp to make the retouches and fine details.
This new one, seems this capability was dropped.

Hi dear friends,

Well, it is working very well with me.

What I did: I removed Gimp 2.8 and all the related plugins and deleted the sub folders gimp2.8 and gimp 2.6
Then I re-installed Gimp 2.8 and the plugins I use with it.
Everything (and I mean everything) started to work fine afterwards.

Well, thank you all that commented on this topic,

Best regards,
Thanks for the very useful tip. I use a lot of Gimp scripts & plugins such as the fx-foundry ones, and after upgrading to v2.8 my output dropped to almost zero as most of the scripts gave errors when I tried to run them. After reading your post I renamed the old Gimp 2.6 & 2.8 folders, uninstalled & reinstalled Gimp, restarted it so it would create a new folder in my home directory, copied the scripts & plugins across from my old folders, and almost all of those operations are now working as they should.

Ahh, I spoke to the guys at the Gimp G+ page and they told me it was a mispackaging error the dropping of the SVG import feature. Will return soon. Thank Goodness!!!

Thank you for that info. Nothing about it on the ML yet.

And best regards to you too, dear Agent Smith, my friend.

I noticed that, a workaround is save in Inkscape as a pdf, these open ok in Gimp.  Fortunately importing a svg as a path still works.

Another thing that does not work correctly (not PCLOS, same thing in a debian installation) text-to-path truncates the text after about 18 characters.

Bound to be lots of fixes in the future.

Michael Natterer, one of the devs, told me it will be fixed, so, it's just a matter of time.

I just noticed this thread and right away went into Gimp to see this "single window feature". I do have 2.8, but whenever I open a toolbox, it pops up in a new window. I can have multiple tabs in that toolbox window, but it's still more than one window. What am I missing?
