Old Webcam & Skype
« on: August 20, 2012, 05:46:11 PM »
I hit a problem trying Skype with an old webcam .....  running KDE 4.8.3  32bit fully updated.

The webcam is

Bus 001 Device 017: ID 046d:08f6 Logitech, Inc. QuickCam Messenger Plus

and the Skype launch command

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so /usr/bin/skype

which have previously worked together ....  but I have not used that webcam in recent months, so do not know how long this situation exists.

None of the usual webcam apps - cheese, Kopete, kamoso, camorama - will display the webcam properly, but some will at the lowest res of 160x120

Launching Skype from the terminal allows it to launch, but when I attempt to set up the video an error occurs .......

Quote
[user@XPS ~]$ LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so /usr/bin/skype
libv4l2: error turning on stream: Input/output error

This would appear to be the problem.

So the question is ......  anyone out there with older wecam that rely on launching Skype with  'compatibility' have any problems?

I would like to determine if this problem is localised or if it is a general problem.

Thanks to all who respond  ;)

Further info that might be applicable, from GuvcView

libv4l2: error turning on stream: Input/output error                   ## Apparently when the res is upped
VIDIOC_STREAMON - Unable to start capture: Input/output error   ## the error occurs

VIDIOC_STREAMON - Unable to start capture: Input/output error
libv4l2: error turning on stream: Input/output error
VIDIOC_STREAMON - Unable to start capture: Input/output error

The result is that GuvcView will display the webcam at 160x120, but any attempt to raise the res results in the display window disappearing.
The other apps are probably attempting to display at higher than the mimimum and so fail to work from the beginning.

That is about as much as I know about it at the moment.

;)

EDIT:
Cheese will dispay the webcam at the lower rate ! ....  and give the same error as above for the higher res.

Kamoso ......  I cannot yet find a way to get it to use a lower res, so all I get is a black screen.

Camorama ....  error ..... "could not connect to video device (/dev/video0)
