KDE 4.8.3 upgrade and panel (Solved)
« on: August 18, 2012, 01:32:22 PM »
Well, tried the upgrade yesterday and it went quite well for awhile. Got my desktop back, for a bit.

IF your upgrading, I think O-P missed one thing, turn special effects OFF, at least I think that's where my problem was. I got duplicate icons on panel, and tried to get my date back under the time and all that was doubled too.

So now I have no box of desktops on my panel, but under the setup for it, shows I have 4 set up, how do I add this back to the panel?

It's like Neal said, if you upgrade it can you fix it after it breaks, trying...

TKS All!

A screenshot would make things much more understandable I think....

I only can add that my desktop effects were activated during upgrade, and nothing like this happened to me...  ;)

Don't know, but knowing my luck....

And programs running don't have icons on panel either...

TKS just18, having a hard time yesterday with this, along with mongo toothache..

Went home and backed up my flash drive and installed KDE on it, then looked and seen what was missing. Also got my desktop icons back, and dolphin figured out. Only thing I'm missing is the trashcan, but I can live with that...

TKS again!

Hi cs,

Nice desktop.

Trashcan. Unlock widgets > Right Mouse in main Desktop > Add Widget > select category File System, select,  job done > Lock Widgets

And remember to backup .kde4 once it is just right - >cp -a .kde4 .kde4bak

I posted that with a different icon set for August, now i have to find it again. After getting icons back on the desktop I got a black screen and had to grab a wallpaper out of that directory... TKS!

I didn't know you could do that, so I now have a trashcan, albeit not the standard one, because you have to unlock widgets to move it around unlike the regular one. But I could have lived without it, I normally hit delete instead of moving to trash.

But it's complete now, just need to sort out where I originally had my icons on the panel...

many TKS!

I didn't know you could do that, so I now have a trashcan, albeit not the standard one, because you have to unlock widgets to move it around unlike the regular one.

If you use Folder View for your desktop you can get your "regular" trashcan back by adding a link to it. Right-click some empty space on the desktop, click "Create New", pick "Link to Location (URL)..." from the dropdown  list, and as the link to the location enter trash:/

And hit Enter.

(Or navigate to the directory your Folder View is pointing at with Konqueror or Dolphin and do the same thing there. Unless you've changed it that would be /home/<yourname>/Desktop.)

But if you use the default Desktop View you have to add the trashcan as a widget.

I did that a couple of months ago when I deleted the trash can off my desktop, my problem was that the trash always showed that there was something in it regardless if there was or not.

+1 on the backup, didn't know you could do that. But have one question, I have a KDE4 and a KDE4 NEW directory, can one of these be deleted then make a backup?

And can the backup be moved to say a flash drive?

You can delete .kde4.new but you need .kde4 because it holds all your personal settings for your desktop as well as preferences set up for individual kde applications. I have just copied my .kde4 to .my.kde4 so it won't be overwritten by the backup created by an upgrade to kde4-config which uses the name .kde4.bak. If the RestoreMyKDEdesktop script fails, for any reason, I have a second change at a manual restoration.

Yes, you can make copies of your backup on a flash drive, or two. Can't have too many backups. ;D

Of what use be there for joy, if not for the sharing thereof?

What package supplies the Trash plasma widget?

I remember I had it as an option, but I no longer see it in the list of available widgets after upgrading and reverting to my old desktop settings.

It seems to come with kde-workspace-core.
