(SOLVED)Synaptic index file missing checksum
« on: August 17, 2012, 06:24:56 PM »
Code: [Select]
W: Release file did not contain checksum information for
http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/pclinuxos/apt/pclinuxos/2010/base/pkglist.kde4

When I try to upgrade from heanet and several other sources
I get the above error message and an incomplete upgrade
package list.    Might end up with a bad partial upgrade so
I didn't upgrade anything yet.

Might clear up tommorrow, don't really know, so just FYI.

Please advise.

THX.

Not trying to upgrade KDE, but changing kde4 to kde does stop
the error message.   But I get 10 lists instead of 11 lists of upgrades.
Anything to keep me from upgrading that you see ?

edit: apparently there is a problem as I mark the available upgrades
the machine says "failed to mark all available upgrades" with this error
message,

Code: [Select]
E: Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks,
this may be caused by held packages.

Have to wait till tomorrow looks like.   Maybe I need all 11 of the
normal lists downloaded.

I don't have KDE, actually just trying to update some packages
on OpenBox.   I'll try LXDE and see what it looks like.

Thanks for the response.

edit: just tried heanet with LXDE, same problem, error messages
the same, get 10 lists instead of 11 with kde instead of kde4 also.

Code: [Select]
[root@local user]# apt-get dist-upgrade
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
Calculating Upgrade... Failed
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  libgegl0.2_0: Obsoletes: libgegl0.1_0 (= 0.1.6)
E: Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages.

If I work on this further I get the above message.
Working with either libgegl0 package wants to
remove gimp and task-printing and a few others.
That can't be right.   Any advise ?

I guess you can add me to the list.  Trying to reload, using heanet as my repo, I get this series of messages.  Is there something wrong
with the heanet site? I've been using them for a long time. Here:

Could not download all repository indexes

The repository might be no longer available or could not be contacted because of network problems.
If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored.
Check your network connection and the correct writing of the repository address in the preferences.

http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/pclinuxos/apt/pclinuxos/2010/base/pkglist.kde4: 404 Not Found [IP: 193.1.193.64 80]

W: Release file did not contain checksum information for
http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/pclinuxos/apt/pclinuxos/2010/base/pkglist.kde4

When I ping the ip address (minus the "80"--don't know what that is) the ping comes right back fine.

Thanx for your interest--doug

The change in your sections line from kde4 to kde is needed regardless of whether you use kde or another DE. You will not be able to successfully reload synaptic without making the change.

We have been experiencing some technical difficulties ---

Thanx for the input, ManBear.

Changing kde4 to kde allowed heanet to connect OK. Checked Reload and Mark All Upgrades, and then got this message;
"E: Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages."
I don't know what to do with this.  Suggestion?

Hi,

If you look at reply #5 should be a clue, even the same files
with unmet dependencies.   On my machine they deleted gimp
to be fixed later, and a couple other files.   Run the apt-get dist-upgrade
command from root terminal to see what files they actually are.

Thanx for your answer, FF.
Here is the result of your suggestion. I'm not sure what it means.  I hope it doesn't mean that I won't be able to read a floppy, and I don't know what
the other files do, but probably don't care.  Still have the same error about "held packages."  So what should I do next?  --doug

Thank you, that all worked.  (I haven't reinstalled the packages, but that should be OK. Some of them I don't even recognize, much less use.)
I have also restored my old desktop, as much as can be. However, I have two questions I hope someone can answer affirmatively:

1.Some of what used to be widgets are now icons, and are links to something.  Is it possible to turn these icons back into widgets?  If so, how?
There are two reasons I ask this.  First, it is not possible to put icons very near the edge of the desktop, and for some it is desirable that they be
right at the edge so they can be accessed while windows are active on screen. (I think particularly of Kate.)  Secondly, icons are not as permanently
fixed as one would like, even when supposedly locked.  Under certain conditions, they will all move from where they have been put up into the top
left corner of the screen, on top of what you  want there. It is a real PITA to put them back.
If there is a general procedure for turning icons into widgets, I'd like to know.  I did already Google.

2. Is there a way to change the background color of the panel to a light blue, like it used to be, instead of almost black, and if so, how.  This is
just a matter of esthetics, but it would be nice.

All assistance gratefully acknowledged and appreciated.  --doug

Look at www.kde-look.org and check it on plasma themes!

Thank you, that all worked.

My updates to my LXDE today went off without a problem.
Pretty big update too.   Ask something in software about
the other 2 questions,  this one is more or less solved
sounds like.

Have a good one.
