will one of the older PCLOS systems work on this old box?
« on: August 18, 2012, 06:56:22 PM »
Hello - my old PC from 1999 finally died, the motherboard burned out.
I transplanted in a motherboard I had in storage, two years newer than the PC above,
but Windows 2000 will not boot (no surprise).  This is the board:

Since Windows 2000 is no longer supported, I was considering PCLOS,
which I run successfully in a much newer box,
but I don't know if any of the versions will work on such an old box
with only 256MB of RAM.

The first thing I have to do is to get access to my old data; it's a small partition
so I could easily copy the stuff I need to a USB stick.  So first I have to find
a LiveCD that will work with a box of that vintage.

Thanks for any info.,
Dave

I should give the PCLinuxOS LXDE version a spin.
If to slow to handle after install, a fallback to another lightweight distro as f.i. Antix comes to mind.

I use Puppy Linux on low spec systems.
Packaging well will cure headaches of many :) But learning to package will cause headaches in many :(
