Local Community College offers "Intro to Linux Course"
« on: April 15, 2013, 10:10:15 PM »
Finally some good news...........  :)

Our local Community College now offers an "Intro to Linux Course"

6 weeks for $149.00
I applaud the Community College for offering this course, even though anyone that takes it could just as easily of went to any of the several local user groups and learned the same information FREE of charge.

About This Course

In this six-week course, you'll master the free SimplyMEPIS Linux desktop system, which can perform all of the functions you currently do with Microsoft Windows or Apple Macintosh.

We’ll start with the basics of Linux as we practice using its graphical environment to manipulate files and folders, create user accounts, and set up hardware devices. Then we’ll delve into the many free programs that come preinstalled on your Linux system, including the popular OpenOffice.org office productivity software. This exciting application allows you to read and create word documents, spreadsheets, and presentation graphics that are compatible with the Microsoft Office suite. Next, we’ll cover the Linux multimedia programs that can play, rip, and burn CDs, as well as play DVDs and video files. We’ll also discuss Linux audio-editing tools that enable you to create your own masterpieces.

After that, we’ll walk through using your Linux desktop to access the Internet. You'll see how to connect to your ISP and use your ISP to read and send messages with Linux’s e-mail software (K mail). Finally, we’ll explore keeping in touch with friends and family by using common Internet Messaging hosts, as well as how to browse your favorite Web sites with the popular Mozilla Firefox Web browser.

Get ready to discover why so many people think Linux makes their computer easier, cheaper, and more fun!

The Instructor is Richard Blum

For those that don't know Richard Blum is the author of several programming and systems administration books, including Professional Assembly Language, C# Network Programming, PostgreSQL 8 for Windows, Sendmail for Linux, Postfix, and Network Performance Open Source Toolkit.

Seems a good price, if only for the instructor.
I shall pass this way but once;
any good therefore that I can do,
or any kindness that I can show
let me not defer nor neglect it,
for I shall not pass this way again.

I am really thankful that I learned Unix before discovering Linux.

There are differences, but knowing the OS for real and behind the GUIs has been much more handy than knowing any particular distro of Linux.

I applaud the College for offering the course, don't get me wrong.

Just thinking that the "Intro To Linux" could be a bit more,, "Intro".

Just saying.   ::) ::)

Nothing you or I can do about it so,, good for them.!!!

I reckoned those who might benefit from the course are unlikely to understand all the 'blurb' .....  what's an ISP?  :D

It looks like a good course, IMO.
Seems to cover all the basics for most people.

...  and I especially like that a distro like Mepis was chosen ....  much more 'new user' friendly than most of the others.

....  now if you could encourage Mr. Blum to use PCLinuxOS instead  ;D  ;D

Well seeing that they didn't offer anything "Linux" last year, this is a good start.  It would of been nice to see it PCLinuxOS, but I am happy that it is the big Brown Nugget series.

I certainly didn't intend to sound negative about the news.

It is great news in fact.

I never thought that for a second. I am really happy that they are now offering an alternative to the Windows and Apple line up. Perhaps this will help spawn a need breed of computer user who isn't dependent those other OS's

Of all that was mentioned in the introductory to Linux, this has to be the best line.

Indeed, a new generation of educated computer users is the only way forward from where we are.

I only hope that hardware manufacturer's will see the benefits of "opening" up this movement and allow it to happen.

If they are smart they will but if they continue to make "deals with devils" they could conceivably slow progress.

( Hay,,, I still have 0.02 left )  LOL
