android apps
« on: August 17, 2012, 03:36:25 PM »
recently i finally changed my old cellphone and got a new smartphone and android was my os of choice

trying lots of apps i found on google play i found some very good and also some bad apps

what i have found really useful and haven't encountered problems using is:

airdroid, lets you copy, paste, delete files between other tasks on your sd card by opening your web browser on your pc, all over wifi, connected to your local network

es file explorer, a simple file browser but also has a image viewer and a audio player

led hd flashlight, it converts the led on your camera into a flashlight

mx player, vlc is not as good as it should be on android so mx is what you can use to watch movies on your smartphone

neoreader qr, fast and simple qr code reader

thalion brightness level, to control the brightness level on your screen and save some battery

3, a simple audio player with great sound quality and a good equalizer, better than the audio player that came with the phone

viber, free calls using your wifi connection to other viber users

colornote, if your smarphone doesn't have a app to take notes, this one is really useful

highway rider, fast and fun bike game, it is fun to crash and see the broken bones count  ;D

anyone has a app or a game that deserves to be tested on a basic smartphone? with no multicores cpu or big video card?

Shuffle is my task app (following GTD-methodology - never read that book, but it's a useful app)

Mobile Metronome and Gstrings-tuner for the musicians here

Bubble (I hope that's the right name - creator: Antoine Vianey) is working good I think

QR Barcode Scanner (by Warriors) to.... scan QR &/ barcodes

Aldiko for ereading (really one of the best in my opinion - however, now I've the Sony PRS-T1 with Android  ::) 8))

and lot of others, but I'm not going to say it all at once  :D

My younger son (33), dropped his Samsung S3 and broke the screen, just three weeks after he got it.

Just picked it up today with a new screen... 304.00 dollars later.

yes, that phone, the screen and the touch surface are one so both pieces have to be changed together making the part more expensive, possibly the earpiece too, haven't seen how it is assembled

imagine how expensive is galaxy note screen  :o

no mater when you buy a phone, break the screen is easy, especially on some blackberry models, model 9300 and 9700 are perfect for that, break the screen is so easy on those two, fortunately the screen is cheap to replace but you have to change a couple pieces more when you change the screen so it is not as simple as change other parts on other phones, probably is faster to change the piece on the samsung than on a blackberry

about apps, just found some nice image editors, camera mx seems great to use

if you like to play simple puzzle games, slide puzzle is for you  ;D

what would be a decent office viewer? office suite free sucks, doesn't work

Yeah, they have it locked into their own walled garden ....  just like Skype.

So I use Linphone which allows for multiple accounts and can be used to call anyone on any SIP address.

I'm running Firefox on my Nook Tablet.  Works fine, even though it is still beta.  Only problem is not so many add-ons yet (I do have AdBlock). Really want X-marks, though.

I also have the Amazon App store on it, and Unblock Me Free as an addictive diversion.

I haven't tried posting here from it - yet...

I'm running Cyanogen 7 (via an N2A card) on my Nook Tablet, and have access to Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Google, for both apps and media.  Not all that much difference, really, except Google has a much larger selection of apps and the Barnes & Noble apps are optimized for the platform.

Still looking for a decent free calendar that I can either point at a specific folder (Dropbox) for the calendar file or one that will allow me to edit a Google calendar while off line and sync back up next time I connect.  I'm accepting recommendations.

Although i suspect the above refers to your Nook, i know that Thunderbird has Lightning which can then be synced with Google.

Have a great evening!  :)

I have been using "Quickoffice" for my .doc and .xls files. So far so good.  ;)

I also quite frequently use -

IMDB (for looking up info about the actors in my favorite shows and movies)

ShopSavy (not only reads barcode but supplies a list of "local" stores that may have the same idem for less)

Food Network (yay!! nuf said)  :D

Max Converter (converts measurements of Length, Area, Volume, Mass, Temp, Angle, Data, Velocity and Pressure, to and or from metrics. You can even find out how many tsps. are in a gallon.)

Opera Mini. ;)

I am using aCalendar which does that for me.
