Is this a Data DVD or a DVD for a DVD player/media player?

What types of files are you trying to copy? .......  please give at minimum their names and extensions etc.

Are the files in folders?  Please give details of the folders if so.

The more info you can supply the better chance of getting a valid response.

Hi dd,

"I get permission denied"

I wonder who the owner is of these files. Perhaps root god of the box, or maybe dd some user....

Right mouse click > Properties > Permissions

I usually have two windows open. Open dolphin > File > New Window

If you are the owner you should be able to drag and drop from one to the other. Otherwise "permission denied"

Dixdocs,

It is your intention with copying the DVD to play it back later from your hard drive?

It is possible to use K3b to copy the DVD as an iso file and use VLC or SMplayer to
decode and play the contents.

Or, you could use K9copy to shrink the contents so they can be written to a single-sided
DVD using K3b for later use on a DVD player.

Or, you could use Handbrake to re-encode the main title into several formats suitable for
a smartphone, tablet or HDTV.  For HDTV you will of course need media player hardware
or software.

In any case I have not had much luck just copying the audio/video directories from a DVD
to my hard drive and had them usable.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

AussieBear.

Your first post said

there are 2 files 1 audio 1 video

It now appears you might be trying to copy two directories/folders from the DVD video.

Are the DVDs commercial? Are they protected?

WHAT Iam I DOING WRONG

As you have not explained in exact detail what procedure you are following, it is impossible to tell if you are doing anything wrong or not.

Can the DVDs you fail to copy be played in your present install?

Here, DVDs that can be played on the PC, simply opening Dolphin with split view will allow the VIDEO_TS folder to be copied from the DVD to the HDD by dragging and dropping it.

Please supply exact information ....  step by step would be good .....  so that accurate help can be provided.

*****

The big question though, is .....  what are you trying to achieve?
Do you want an exact backup of the DVD on your HDD?
Do you want to convert the video to some other format so it can be played with something specific?

Information is the key .......  you have it, we don't.

Providing it would be a good start.  ;)

1.Insert DVD 2.desktop  recognizes DVD  6 Options available ,I open file manager Dolphin. Two items found   One AUDIO_TS   Two VIDEO_TS  Nothing  in AUDIO_TS File I was trying to copy them both by Left clicking on the  DVD title  but nothing copied. Left clicking on VIDEO_TS and choosing the Copy To option  I managed to  copy One DVD after  about the 4th attempt .None of the copies would play in VLC & Ive had to  delete them.I normally  know to  aksess  DVD I  would click  the home button nothing shows up in places menu in dolphin at the moment. But trying both methods give me a banner saying cannot copy files from  Errno5 .Auto skip skip and cancel I have tried  all Three options but Dolphin still copies but nothing  usable is copied.Let me also say I have read the Dolphin Handbook   Also I have read the usage insructions on using this messaging system and I still havent worked out how to indent a line Let alone copy & edit some other peoples text I Have spent more than 24 hours reading other peoples stuff So dont knock me help me Pleez

You did not say if these DVDs would play from the optical drive. :(

If not then you are likely missing some software which allows the OS to read and decrypt the DVD.

Use Synaptic Package Manager, click on Reload, search for the following three packages
libdvdcss2
libdvdread3
libdvdread4
and install them if not already installed.

1.Insert DVD
2.desktop  recognizes DVD  6 Options available ,
I open file manager Dolphin. Two items found   One AUDIO_TS   Two VIDEO_TS
Nothing  in AUDIO_TS File
I was trying to copy them both by Left clicking on the  DVD title  but nothing copied.
Left clicking on VIDEO_TS and choosing the Copy To option  I managed to  copy One DVD after  about the 4th attempt .
None of the copies would play in VLC & Ive had to  delete them.
I normally  know to  aksess  DVD I  would click  the home button nothing shows up in places menu in dolphin at the moment.
But trying both methods give me a banner saying cannot copy files from  Errno5 .
Auto skip skip and cancel I have tried  all Three options but Dolphin still copies but nothing  usable is copied.
Let me also say I have read the Dolphin Handbook   Also I have read the usage insructions on using this messaging system and I still havent worked out how to indent a line Let alone copy & edit some other peoples text I Have spent more than 24 hours reading other peoples stuff So dont knock me help me Pleez

Use of the "Enter" button on the keyboard makes your post more readable.

Your refer to Left clicking to copy .....  that surely should be Right click? No?

Right click on VIDEO_TS on the DVD should give the option to Copy. Also Left click & hold will allow drag & drop to your HDD copy.

Apparently Dolphin does copy but you cannot play the copy .....  which is likely due to protection system which should be overcome by the installation of libdvdcss2.

Please note the difference between the icons for files and those for folders.
VIDEO_TS (and AUDIO_TS) are folders not FILES.

When copied correctly (no protection) VLC is capable of playing the complete folder VIDEO_TS.

NOTE:  The above is written on the basis that your install is fully updated  ;)

Hi dd,

I backup certain of my DVDs to files so I can play them directly with VLC.

Install libdvdcss, acidrip and handbrake.

Check you can play the DVD with VLC directly.

If it plays ok then either fire up acidrip(slightly more fiddly, can increase the gain) or handbrake
Output is to a file which VLC can play, easier perhaps. Takes a long time to do, maybe an hour per disk.

Article in one of the PCLOS magazines about backing up your DVDs.

Put the error picture up on something like tinypic.com or other service and copy the link into your post ...........  use 'Preview' button to confirm how it looks before posting.

I have never seen an error like you describe ......  but this link refers to it

Hi dd,

I did a quick search on you-know-what for Erno5 and something to do with read/write error on disk maybe, which suggests you might want to try a fsck check on your partitions with a live cd (ask for help on how to do this).

Next, have you installed handbrake (and my fave acidrip)?
Fire up handbrake, dvd in drive.
See it?
Switch to Video tab. I find Video Encoder ffmpeg4 is quicker
Hit start, come back in an hour or so. File in home, right click with VLC.

(Play with acidrip which has more choices. I prefer this)

Note not all DVDs can be backed up, some are troublesome

HI guys Iam back .I been trying to work why some DVDs  copy & others dont  I was hoping it  had something to do with the physical size of DVDs as the first DVD I copied sucessfully        was   about 4.GB & the 2nd was about 7.GB & failed I  tried copying 10 DVDs of varying sizes 3 GB to 7.2GB Although the failure rate was 50% non of the larger DVDs would copy. Totaley inconclusive I know but If someone could could trying to reproduce this Errno:5 issue it might be more valid than uploading the screenshot I took.

Also I tried downloading PCLinuxOS     404 ERR  Mini version as well was going to run fsck in live mode as suggested

still dont know how to indent help again please

The link I posted implied it might be a hardware problem ......  optical drive, cabling or memory ...

Quote
This particular error is often due to a faulty CD/DVD disk or drive, or a faulty hard disk. It may help to clean the CD/DVD, to burn the CD/DVD at a lower speed, to clean the CD/DVD drive lens (cleaning kits are often available from electronics suppliers), to check whether the hard disk is old and in need of replacement
