[SOLVED] No system sound after upgrade to 4.8.3
« on: August 17, 2012, 12:51:19 AM »
Although I can play mp3's, wav's, ogg's etc., all system sounds are dead. I also have the following related problems:

[1] System Settings -> Multimedia
Click on Phonon and after a few seconds of waiting, System Settings vanishes.

[2] System Settings -> Application and System Notifications -> Manage Notifications -> Event source: -> KDE Workspace
Click on any of the enabled notifications, click the "Play" button and System Settings immediately vanishes.

Any help with this would be much appreciated, thanks.

Solved by uninstalling phonon-vlc

Thanks, it worked for me too.  I was puzzled about it myself.

O K, maybe something crazy here, on my laptop I booted up today and start up sound is missing again. I go to "configure your desktop" and "System Notifications" and go to KDE workspace and click on "login" and click play and as before the box vanishes. and when I go to look for phonom vlc in synaptic, it is gone. any guidance as to what happened. un-installing phonom vlc 2 days ago fixed the problem, but now, I don't know what to fix.  Thanks for any help.

OK ,now i'm really confused. I have rebooted and ran updates again and phonon is back, I un-installed it again, and sound is back working. I think I have a gremlin in my lap top. I don't use this thing very often, so maybe it was just a hic-cup, or maybe I'm just senile. either way, it's working for now. Thanks for the reply muungwana , if it does it again I will follow your advice. thank you.

OK, it's my first time posting on any forum.  Patience is virtue.
To respond to the request above: I started 'systemsettings' in a terminal, browsed to 'Application Settings' - Applications tab - Event Source: 'KDE Workspace' - then highlight the "logout" sound (for example).  Click on the 'play sound' icon and the window disappears.  What's left in the terminal window is:

[steve@steve-pclos Documents]$systemsettings
QDBusConnection: session D-Bus connection created before QCoreApplication. Application may misbehave.

Not missing libs, the library is there,it is just not updated to reflect changes in vlc.

The solution to the problem is on the first response to this thread.

Open synaptic, search for "phonon-vlc" and then uninstall it, search for "phonon-gstreamer" and then install it if it is not installed. Go back to systemsettings and make sure "phonon-gstreamer" is a prefered backend and you should have your sound back.
