Where o where is the kDE 2012.02 iso?
« on: August 16, 2012, 09:53:17 PM »
My lappy is set up to dual-boot Vista and PCLOS. Yesterday my Vista partition b0rked and it looks like I need to reinstall, but before I do that I want to burn a fresh copy of the PCLOS Live CD so I can restore the MBR (when I installed Linux I did so from my USB stick, and have reformatted that since then.)

I can't find the KDE 2012.02 iso file on any of the mirrors, just a pclinuxos64-kde-test05.iso file. And the URL for the main download location at distrib-coffee, the link being on the "KDE Desktop" page under the "Get PCLinux OS" menu on the home page, is 404-compliant. What gives? (I heard there's a trial KDE version out there somewhere and another release in the works, so that's probably related somehow. But I need 2012.02 just so I can fix my Windows installation.)

As an aside, I do have an older (PCLOS 2011.06) Live CD here. Can I repair the MBR using that CD without breaking my 2012 installation on my HD?

It's a crying shame that we must even be aware of the fact that a duel boot environment with winders is an issue.

I feel for you man. The winders "b0rked" so you must consider "Both" environments compromised.

Good luck.  ;)

Reinstall Windows on its partition. When done use the LiveCD to redo-mbr. It is that simple. Try that with Windows. ;)

In a word, yes.

In two words,  "you can".

The three words, "go right ahead!"

And four words, "I highly recommend that"

Five... "Proceed thusly, you shall prevail"

and all sorts of other nonsense.

Well we've established PCLinuxOS KDE 2012.02 aint up in a cloud, mine is on a CD-R, on top of many other PCLOS versions, wink, wink ; say no more ... ( burn it ! )

Back when I used to 'Dual' boot, many moons ago, I would make a backup of the 'Win' MBR. Superfulous I know.

Download free MbrFix (zip)

Thanks for all the help, guys (and gals, if any.) :)

My old Live CD was b0rken (it got scratched, I think) but I found an old Gnome version and was able to restore the MBR from that. It worked like a fine Swiss watch!*

Thanks again.

*I've always wondered about that expression. I used to be interested in old pocket watches, and back in the day when those were used the Swiss were known for making cheap copies of the best watches, which were in turn made in the US and England. My, how things change.
