I read all the thread but I still think something is unclear:
1) if the problem is xscreensaver, then why _only_ the OpenGL modules stopped working?

Could this possibly be related to a completely different different problem I'm having here: http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,109262.msg933678.html#msg933678

-- Eddie

I have verified that I have the same problem (see the related thread). So yes, this could be the problem, even though I can use glxgears without problems, and I'm using desktop effects with OpenGL too.

I don't know enough to answer the Kernel's question.  But one thing is certain, someone has some work to do.

Want to know an even stranger thing?
Today I compiled a KDE OpenGL screensaver that's not in our repositories (http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php/Solarsystem?content=112235), installed it and... it works!  ???
The rest of the bunch are still not working. Just to keep it clear: I have NO xscreensaver here, all my OpenGL modules are NATIVE KDE screensavers.

I have posted in several of the posts about OpenGL screensavers and have only seen them closed out with some mombo-gumbo about xscreensavers.

The problem is NOT that.

Stellarium has also not worked for some time and the output from a terminal for both problems seems to be related.

[earl@new ~]$ stellarium
...
...
libEGL warning: DRI2: failed to find _glapi_get_proc_address
libEGL warning: GLX: failed to load GLX
libEGL warning: unable to load st_GL.so
...

* * *

[earl@new ~]$ /usr/bin/keuphoria.kss
libEGL warning: DRI2: failed to find _glapi_get_proc_address
libEGL warning: GLX: failed to load GLX
libEGL warning: unable to load st_GL.so
...

In other words, "Someone" has a lot of work to do.  I hope they find the problem and post the updates to the repository in the not too distant future.

What bothers me is the "poo-pooing" this subject has received by some of the more senior folks around here.

say names, don't say senior like we are dangerous or untouchable because we are not, just be polite and follow rules and you will be heard like anyone else on this forum

if we say that opengl screensavers were removed by kde but some still work it is not our fault, we are not developing kde4, just using stable versions adjusted to our needs

now the stellarium problem sounds like a problem with opengl libraries, not sure if related to kde handling improperly opengl or just opengl not working well

have you tried it on another environment different than kde4?

T6, OpenGL screen savers have NOT been removed from KDE4. They simply removed compatibility with xscreensaver, which is a VERY different thing.
Presently, PCLinuxOS is the ONLY distro having this kind of problem out of the distros I regularly use (Mint, PCLOS, Mageia).
Also read the thread about Digikam advanced slideshow and you'll possibly start to see there's something wrong here.

As Chris70 said, this problem does not exist on other distros.  I have a fully updated installation of Mint 13(KDE), on my backup machine,  that is running the OpenGL screensavers just fine.  So it is a PCLinuxOS specific problem.

From what others have said, the problem is more widespread than just screensavers.  Which means, "Somebody" has some work to do.  The crazy thing is, it could be something as simple as a misplaced operand, which is extremely difficult to find.

ok, i confused one with the other, thank you for clarifying that

still if it is broken no one knows what the problem is and we are not doing anything special, if the problem is the version of gl libraries we have and those other distros are not using the same, then that is the problem, other distros deal stability issues different than us

if it is something that kde made, it is not our fault and other distros patched the situation, maybe know the solution on other distros could help but i honestly said what i think of screensavers and why no one should use it to waste resources but, it seems that my opinion is problematic around, hard to care about problems when everything is a problem  :-X

I got Xscreensaver to run, but it proved flaky and did not always work. So I disabled it and am running the slide show from Kscreensaver.

But like you, I would much prefer to run the GL screensavers, the way we could before "Someone" IMPROVED the system.

Deb

I have totally given up on the new ss, and have relegated myself to using the few that actually do work. :-\

There are several things in the new system that need to be fixed. And these will most likely be taken care of in future developments. Since this is a new setup it's not at all surprising to find there are many things that don't work correctly.

I recently discovered that one configuration setting doesn't even have a working "Apply" button - it's greyed out. And VLC Media Player shuts off my monitor after 10 minutes, even when it's not running. :o

Did you report the package with the non working "Apply" button as being broken?    As for the VLC turning off your monitor after 10 minutes and especially when it is not running, I find really hard to believe. I do suspect there is something else that is turning off your monitor.  Please check /home/username/.kde4/Autostart   is there a file in there called noblank.sh?

I forgot which one it was, otherwise I'd report it.

As for the VLC turning off your monitor after 10 minutes and especially when it is not running, I find really hard to believe.

Then read this: http://www.google.com/search?q=vlc+black+screen+screensaver

I do suspect there is something else that is turning off your monitor. Please check /home/username/.kde4/Autostart is there a file in there called noblank.sh?

Yes there is. Dunno what it does tho. ???

It reads...

#!/bin/sh
xset s off
xset -dpms

I DO think at least Mint patched something, because on Mint KDE you can still use xscreensaver modules despite what the KDE developers have said about it. But this is a different issue. I'm not talking about reverting the decision of KDE developers, I'm only talking about reviving the OpenGL native KDE modules on PCLOS.

I think there is something wrong in our modules, because an OpenGL module that I compiled myself is working (see earlier in this thread).

if it is something that kde made, it is not our fault and other distros patched the situation, maybe know the solution on other distros could help but i honestly said what i think of screensavers and why no one should use it to waste resources but, it seems that my opinion is problematic around, hard to care about problems when everything is a problem  :-X

"There is no problem with your (or other's) opinion, as long as you don't force it on everyone"

i can share my opinion or ideas and support them with pros and cons but how could i force anyone to believe what i write?  each one decides what to do on their pc and rarely i can help at all, at best

most people just read what i write and do the opposite
