Thanks for reading my post
For a couple weeks I have not been able to watch online videos like Youtube or TV episodes.  Was preparing to write this question and realized I have not been able to update for perhaps a similar length of time.
I tried to update and presumed my Pass had expired, so selected another mirror and no items are selected for updating-- OK for one or two days, but it has been like that a couple weeks.  Just tried Calgary mirror and nothing.  Looks like it is updating, but nothing selected.
When I last installed there was a utility to test which mirrors were closest- but don't remember where that was.
I am using KDE version of PClos
So two problems:
1- not able to update
2- not able to watch online videos like I used to.  Am using Firefox 14.0.1

Thank you
katie

It sounds like you need to read this post about upgrading to KDE 4.8.3

After pressing "Reload" and then "Mark all upgrades", Synaptic still shows no updates?

Thank you both for your responses:
To aging-- If you are referring to the time prior to my posting my question, I did try the normal reload-mark-apply-apply route-- and nothing showed up.
But since reading the post indicated by Just18 [referring to post by Old-Polack] I did the following:
Quote
Normal upgrade with manual cleanup:

Do the normal Reload --> Mark All Upgrades --> Apply --> Apply upgrade. If no packages are listed as broken, proceed as usual. Some packages will be shown as being removed, without being replaced. Take note of these package names, for use later. Which packages these will be will vary, depending on what is actually installed on any given individual's system.
Making the change in my mirror as directed, I then tried the Reload, etc., again and got the following:
Quote
The following problems were found on your computer
E: Error, PkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks,
this may be caused by held packages
I am presuming this is caused by some packages being downloaded in an earlier update attempt-- If so, how do I clean this cache? Or what should I do at this point?
I am still on the screen <E: Error> and writing from another machine
thank you
katie

Remove the problem packages ....  they will have version  4.6.5

Take not of those you mark for removal.

After their removal continue with the upgrade

After the upgrade install the 4.8.3 versions of the packages you removed.

There are many threads on the forum about this, so you might get better instructions from one of those   ;)

My solution was to download the newest quarterly release and install it--- backed up data.
Couple of minor things, but I will start new thread on that

Thank you both agmg & Just18 for your insights and helpfulness-- but the reinstall seemed the easier and more time effective way of going with the problems encountered

Yes it is, particularly if you have little of your own installed or edited in the OS itself.

Glad you got going again  ;)
