Strange! I don't have kde-plasma-addons installed but the show desktop icon is still on my taskbar and works.

You need to restart plasma-desktop. Hmmm, lemme see ... use at your own risk ... :D

On a konsole:
pkill plasma-desktop

Then restart with
plasma-desktop

Or it would just be much safer to logout/in.  ;D

already logged out and in a few times so that isn't the problem. I have been very fortunate because I haven't experienced any negative effects since upgrading last night everything that I do and had installed and setup still works.

Forgot to report back what I found. I was still running on the old file. But I'm not now.

Hi, just did an update and lost all my KDE settings and spent an hour trying to get things back to the way I want them (still haven't sorted out the huge ALt Tab Icons).

Logged onto to Forum to express displeasure only to find there was a restore KDE icon but I did not notice it amongst all the others on my desktop.

Perhaps there is someway that instead of changing all the KDE settings a small script could pop up on reboot saying "Hi we have updated your machine, would you like us remove all your customisation or would you prefer us to leave it the way you spent hours setting it up" rather than hoping people will spot the new icon. Many thanks  >:(

Everything is covered in Old-Polacks post in General News and Announcements. That's what I followed to the letter and everything is now working fine and dandy. I understand your annoyance but all in all I think the team have done a tremendous job.

Not knocking their brilliant work, just offering a suggestion. I am sure I won't be the only person who gets caught out like this.
Setting up a desktop the way they like it is perhaps one of the few changes that people make and your average windows refuge may not have a first thought of "Lets check out the PCLinuxOS forum in case there is a post about this." (I know I didn't 8-) as this "restore desktop" is I believe a new feature?
Cheers
Tony

We have always said, "Search before posting". There are many threads where this very subject has been discussed, why the situation occurs, and the easy solution given.

The backup of the user's ~/.kde4 directory containing all KDE specific personal settings is part of the installation process when the kde4-config package is upgraded. At first the information to manually correct the situation was given, then later a script was provided, with a desktop icon to run it, installed in plain sight on the desktop itself. This was also announced, and the process explained

All of this historical information is currently available to anyone reading the forum. It is easily found with a forum search. That you chose to act without first doing proper research, is your fault, and yours alone. We cannot possibly know what you do with your own computer in the privacy of your home. We have no control over when, or if, you actually upgrade your computer's software. The best we can do is provide the information on how to properly maintain your system, and for out of the ordinary upgrades, information as to what to expect, and solutions to common known issues involved. It's your job to look for that information, either before doing the software upgrade, or as soon as you notice something you feel is irregular, after the fact, then perform the necessary steps that information reveals.

Of what use be there for joy, if not for the sharing thereof?

I learned the hard way to check first after the big surprise going from kde 3.x to kde 4.x.

Just for info.
I needed to get another test machine running so I did a fresh install of PCLinuxOS 2012.02 on an old pentIV, I got a good idea what the new KDE update would do so I just put a few random icons on the desktop and changed it to blue, did 407mb of updates, re-booted> log-in = Black desktop with bottom panel only> re-booted again> log-in = new desktop, bottom panel ok, No desktop icons so put a few on = ok.
No restore desktop icon, but it can be found in your 'Home' folder directory in the ' Desktop' directory. ran it came up with the error    The backup folder (~/.kde4.bak) was not found. Exiting.   it was there but empty !.
Firefox froze so went back to the older flash from synaptic and that solved that.
I was testing  'Linphone' that froze , Dolphin directories take a lot of clicks to open them !.
Put two widgets on the desktop.
Next other strange thing that just happened, I set the bottom panel 'clock' settings to show seconds and date , also set uk ,clicked ok > went Black screen again > then came back my desktop I started with from the new install, It has completle gone back to my few random icons and my blue desktop and my bottom panel is the same as it was from my new install .
So what happen to the updates.?
I see I have now got the icon on the desktop 'Restore my kde desktop' , I'm going to 'post' this first then click on it to see what happens.
Bye for now.

Edit.. pressing the 'Restore my kde desktop' just brings this up 'The backup folder (~/.kde4.bak) was not found. Exiting',
I did a re-boot , log-in    No new Desktop or bottom panel ! , it's like I have never done any KDE updates.
Going to bed now.

I have also lost the volume control, even though I do have sound (full volume)

Install kmix then logout.

Kmix was already installed!  Do you mean to reinstall it and try again?
