Here are the results of lpstat -t:

        ready to print

The file that failed was an .ods file that is a exel-type table that fits on one page.  Prints now with gutenprint.  When the default driver was installed, it only printed black and white.

Another question.  I see I still have popups about hplip.  If gutenprint v5.2.7 simplified is what I finally wind up with, can I just delete hplip?  Maybe they're competing, that's why the errors here and there.  In the past, I occasionally get where the page stops mid-way through and spits out.  I have to open hp device manager, stop printer, restart printer, and it prints again.  I also get popups on the lower right that say hplip and driver not installed.

In a root konsole copy paste the following statements and post results

Code: [Select]
lpoptions -p Hewlett-Packard-OfficeJet-V40 | tr " " "\n"
Code: [Select]
lpoptions -p Hewlett-Packard-OfficeJet-V40 -l
I will answer your remaining questions when I have the results.  Descriptions are not close enough to facts, time and again it used to send me down the wrong path by relying on a description.    8)

With existing driver, I would like you to print the .odt file to a pdf file (I notice you have the pdf driver installed), then open this file and print it out. Describe any oddity.

I get the impression you understand what print queues are, I would like you to install a que with the "faulty" or default driver. (You do not touch your existing que, you are adding another one.)

When you have added the que please post a new lpstat -t just to be safe in case you fail on the next step.  ;D

In root konsole for the 'new printer' xxxx post the result of the:

Code: [Select]
[root@localhost ~]# lpoptions -p xxxx | tr " " "\n"
Code: [Select]
lpoptions -p xxxx -l
The I will compare the drivers (still not forgotten your previous question)

Before all these issues started, I had another "printer" installed in addition to cups-pdf and the hp officejet v40.  I believe it said "print to file" as a printer option when I wanted to print.  It allowed me to print a pdf or ps file to where I choose.  That is now gone after the update a week or two ago and whatever tweaking I've done before what you have asked me to do on this post.  Not sure where it went, how it left, or how to get it back.

Yesterday, I printed out the ods file no problems - it looked fine with the table and all.

Today, working on the directions you provided in the last post, I first attempted to print to pdf.  I selected cups-pdf when printing, and I didn't know where to look for the file.  Did some searching online, and one post said look in /var/spool/cups-pdf/my_user_name, and nothing there.  I then looked again when I chose cups-pdf, in the dialogue box, and chose the options tab, and there was a print to file option that allowed me to choose where to save.  Saved pdf to file.  Opened file and printed.  The content on the left side of the landscape print was cut off a little, and the date on the bottom was, too.

I tried to print out the original ods file, and I got the error:

Status Message
There are status messages associated with this queue.  The printer's state message is:  '/usr/lib/cups/filter/gstoraster failed'

When I looked at yesterday's printout of the ods, there was a problems with 2 of the last column headings:  2nd to last 1/2 printed, and the last one was missing.  The last 2 columns and rows did completely print in the grid fashion it does with a table.

I get the impression you understand what print queues are, I would like you to install a que with the "faulty" or default driver. (You do not touch your existing que, you are adding another one.)

You give me too much credit here...I HOPE you mean add another printer (same printer), but choose the other default driver (hpcups 3.12.6), and do not delete the same printer with the gutenprint driver.  If that was not your intent - I goofed up and need more instructions on how to do what you want.

Anyway - now that both are installed as printers, I rebooted, and tried to print the ods with both and got the error above about gstoraster failing.

Here is the output you requested:

EDIT:  Found my notes how to add print to pdf back (I think), but I need to access CUPS through http://localhost:631/admin/.  I wrote another post where putting in "root" as the user and using my root password did not work, and I still have not resolved this, so no access that way.

Just scanned your reply, a little bit of errrh goofing   ;D
You have correctly installed a second que with another driver, and lpstat -t is fine

xxxx = Hewlett-Packard-OfficeJet-V40-2

Repeat the two lpoptions -p replacing as above  8)

Click on link below, select Administration and Add a Printer, then when asked for details: root and your sysadmin password, this must work. Else there is a problem ( I have come accros failure here)

http://localhost:631

Your way should have worked too, darned, but try process I have outlined, this is a worry as the CUPS admin is the best but a wee bit complicated. When trouble sets in I only use CUPS to plow right through.

Addition:

I think you are on the right track with getting hold of this easy way to print to a file.

Quote
Extension for creating pdf-Files with CUPS
"cups-pdf" is a backend script for use with CUPS - the "Common UNIX Printing
System" (see more for CUPS under http://www.cups.org/).
"cups-pdf" uses the ghostscript pdfwrite device to produce PDF Files.

This version has been modified to store the PDF files on the Desktop of the
user. This behavior can be changed by editing the configuration file.

Above probably applicable to you ?

Sounds like you have have found how you can print to both pdf and ps, I have just installed the v40 printer with CUPS driver and also installed the CUPS-pdf program, now my lpstat -t looks as follows:

Quote
[root@localhost gert]# lpstat -t
scheduler is running
no system default destination
device for Cups-PDF: cups-pdf:/
device for kah5683-hp-v40: socket://localhost:9100
Cups-PDF accepting requests since Sat 25 Aug 2012 12:16:32 AM EST
kah5683-hp-v40 accepting requests since Fri 24 Aug 2012 11:57:38 PM EST
printer Cups-PDF is idle.  enabled since Sat 25 Aug 2012 12:16:32 AM EST
printer kah5683-hp-v40 is idle.  enabled since Fri 24 Aug 2012 11:57:38 PM EST
[root@localhost gert]#

I tested the CUPS-pdf printer and it works.

Quote
...
The printer's state message is:  '/usr/lib/cups/filter/gstoraster failed'

This bothers me a little bit as it looks like hard work, have to see if I can sneak out of that one.

The idea of course is to try and isolate the area where the problems occurs. Native print output from linux is postscript. If the error is in a ps output the application may be the problem etc.

I am not clear if you only have the problem when printing from LibreOffice or do we need to test other applications?

Are you on a network and trying to change remotely??

Added:
Probably better expressed this way, your CUPS server is running on the pc from which you are trying to "log in to CUPS"

In a minute I will have modified my previous message, added some bits

I was assuming you were at the "server" pc.  I was a bit unsure how the liveCD of 2012.02 was set up but I have just booted this on my machine. A running CUPS server is installed as well as Firefox so in Firfox I used the link:
http://localhost:631

Went to add a printer, supplied login details:  root/root in this case, and it worked. If you have a liveCD remember this when the present problem goes a bit too far.  It fixes nothing, only makes you feel good that login did work here. ;D

Back to the problem. To me it appears that the CUPS system administrator has decided you should not have access, that is rare for individuals to mess around with so unlikely.  I don't think I personally have had the problem of group membership gone a bit astray. Updates/upgrade may have done something.

In short I am struggling now but the cause ought to be found.

http://localhost:631/admin

Cliking on above, does it take you directly to the Admin page? When you get to the admin page, there is a group of fields towards top right hand corner under the Server the first one is Edit Configuration file can you get in there without CUPS requesting login details?

This configuration file can also be handled in konsole, the statement:  cat /etc/cups/cupsd.conf for example.

Run this in user konsole, you should be told something like Permission denied

Run it in root konsole and you will get the content, and of course you can use nano to edit the file etc

Do you have room on your hard drive and inclination to set up a KDE32-mini 2012.08 from scratch just to test out your printer?  It is fairly simple and it would remove a lot of unknowns as far as customisations you may have done.  I just happen to be battling with KDE32 and KDE32-mini (the latest ISOs released this week I think it was).  You may however long since have past the point of tinkering to just using linux as a tool, I am just getting a bit stubborn on this problem.   ;D

wedgetail:

Not sure what you mean by "server" pc.  I am at my home office desktop computer.

Got in to "edit configuration file" without a password.  This is the same file I have seen earlier at /etc/cups/cupsd.conf.

This is the beginning of the config file for cups:

LogLevel warn
SystemGroup lpadmin root
Group sys
User lp
Listen *:631
Listen /var/run/cups/cups.sock

Does it seem ok?

Since it is just my home computer for biz, I could change SystemGroup from lpadmin root to just lpadmin, or maybe lp, as long as I am a member of both, which I am?

The server I mention is the CUPS server if you had LAN at home the CUPS server will 'serve' the LAN, we will not get into more details about that, I will just get myself lost.  We are only talking about one pc in your case that is fine.

The web interface to the CUPS is just a graphics environment, albeit a great one, for managing CUPS which can be managed quite easily from the command line, this is why it is the same file.

Your file beginning is stock standard, same as on my KDE64 I am running at present, we are back at square one, you should have success with your CUPS login.

No don't change anything in the file leave as is because you will forget and it is no longer standard for next time you run into a problem.

I have not asked what Web Browser are you using?  I generally always have Opera, Firefox and Konqueror to hand, Opera my favorite but is not 'fool proof' certain things will fail so I have at least two others on a hard working machine.  Konqueror and Opera both work here.  Just notice I have not installed Firefox yet here.

Any of you seasoned trouble shooters out there that can give some hints? Contributions welcome  :D

Edit: Addition
Occurred to me that one simple test would be to create another user on the system, log in as that user and just test the CUPS admin login to see if it makes any difference.  I not just delete that user again, to avoid confusion again.

Any hints in the Access Log and Error Log, also found on the http://localhost:631/admin  page

Was able to get in cups admin by editing user in pcc.  In groups, added adm, and was able to get in.  I went back and unchecked it.

Looking in that groups section, why isn't adm, printer, sys and root checked?

Mental telepathy perhaps, one of my latest thoughts was suggest you did some changes in PCC. I did not know what to suggest however so I refrained.   ;D   I will however not go into more details about PCC, suffice to say PCC and the hp programs etc is not in my interest area when trouble shooting.

If you search Forum I think you may come across others who has succeeded making similar fixes. I do not understand the implications of PCC apparently needing a tweak to allow CUPS adm login access, perhaps that is a similar reason why my PCC can not handle printer setup on one of my systems, I had been using that system for months and doing a lot of printer problem shooting on the Forum, when I discovered PCC could not reproduce what a member said he was doing.  Bit of a surprise of course as my printers were working fine, but I just left it alone, I know the power of CUPS. Enough advertising that does not help you.   ;D

I do suggest that you do whatever tweak is needed in PCC to maintain web interface login access, then we proceed.  You wrote CUPS Web Interface is not foreign to you, stick with it and by all means use all the extras available but maintain your basic CUPS knowledge.

The question about why certain groups not checked, I don't know, I am not even sure where you are finding what you are talking about.  ;)  In CUPS configuration or PCC ?  Look at it this way I believe that from 2012.02 (and even before) ISO and onwards KDE has CUPS configured to run from LiveCD and webinterface login will work. When installed to hard drive this should automatically be maintained. Something may have happened since your startup time.

If you want to follow up on this, try installing a new user and see what happens to CUPS operation, will you again need to change the user in PCC?

If you make the change in PCC, does it have any influence on your printer operation?  Still failing?

Ahhh, it is probably time that we establish a standard complex test page for this topic.  I will suggest using the PCLinuxOS Homepage.  This is a complex one to print.

http://www.pclinuxos.com/

We do not want to use paper at this stage so only print to pdf, and view the file Okular.  Of course it would be a good idea to print to Postscript file too, just to make sure they look the same.

As a precaution, turn your printer off so you don't accidentally let the que print, especially if raterising goes belly up and errors not caught in the backend, the printer may just keep printing gibberish.

If you decide to have a go at printing from Okular, only print one page at the time.  Remove most of your paper from the tray as an extra precaution.  I will let you guess why I mention this,  I have some fast machinery here and need to get out of my chair and around the deskt to my Network printer.   ;D

This is how to edit user groups in PCC:

PCC/system/administration tools/manage users on system.  Right click on main user and select edit.  Select group tab.  There are the user groups that you are part of that are checked off, and the ones you are not in that are not checked.

I did add another user, gave it the same groups I was in, and it didn't help, so I deleted.

I was having problems finding my printed cups-pdf files.  I went to /etc/cups/cups-pdf.conf and edited the file.  The default place to print to was /var/spool/cups-pdf/${USER}, but I didn't see anything there.  Changed line 45 to #Out /home/MYUSERNAME/Desktop/, instead of #Out /var/spool/cups-pdf/${USER}.  Did not have to reboot, worked right away to put on desktop.  No way that I know of right now to name file, though.

I used cups-pdf to print my ods table to pdf.  Opened file, and it showed up miniaturized on the portrait page, and printed the same way.  By miniature, I mean 1 1/4" X 1 1/4" or so.

I opened original ods file, chose gutenprint printer, selected options tab and checked print to file, which saved a pdf file.  Did the same with the cups printer (same printer, different driver - hpcups 3.12.6 vs CUPS+gutenprint v5.2.7 Simplified).  Opened both pdf's...they looked fine.  Opened original ods file.  Printed with cups driver, then printed with gutenprint driver.  BOTH had the error /usr/lib/cups/filter/gstoraster failed!

Saw Tex's answer to gstoraster failed here:  http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,97359.0.html.  Looked for ghostscript-common, and there are no updates, so I reinstalled.  Didn't see a difference.

Saw where you contributed here:  http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,97245.60.html.  This got me to thinking about margins and the move from openoffice (OO) to libreoffice.

When I opened up ods file (which again is a spreadsheet with a title in heading and date in footer going approximately from margin to margin) I tried to print with both gutenprint driver and cups driver (again, have my same printer installed twice - once with each driver).  Both have the gstoraster failed error.  I highlighted and copied my spreadsheet (knowing it was made in OO when it was installed on my computer a while ago) opened up a new spreadsheet, and pasted it in.  Changed to landscape, deleted header (title) and footer (date).

I started with gutenprint driver.  With grayscale draft mode, got gstoraster failed.  Grayscale standard printed ok.  Color draft printed, but printed a partial colum at the end of the page after finishing the complete spreadsheet.  Color standard didn't finish the spreadsheet.

With the cups driver, it only offered grayscale - no color.  With both draft mode and normal, it printed a partial column after completing the total spreadsheet.

With the full spreadsheet printed from the ods file in libreoffice, there is 3 1/4" left on the right side margin of empty space.  The default margins are .79" all sides.  I tried changing margins first, but it gave me the gstoraster failed error again, so I went back to default margins.  I thought I would widen the columns since I had so much space on the right.  The default column width is .89".  I tried 1.2" and 1.0", and got gstoraster failed error.  I thought maybe it just wanted the default of .89", so I tried .90" and that worked, so I tried .95" - knowing I had a lot of room - and the printer cut off from 1/2 of the 2nd to last column on.

I next tried the spreadsheet that was saved to pdf.  Both cups and gutenprint saved the whole spreadsheet just fine...I can see everything.  I used the original ods with the title header and date footer.

I opened originally with foxit, but when I printed, the rows had different sizes in draft mode.  In normal mode, it cut off part of the left and bottom margin.

I then opened the pdf in okular.

Using the cups driver, the only color choice was grayscale.  In draft and normal mode, it cut off part of left side (about 1/4").

Using the gutenprint driver, grayscale draft and standard printed everything in full.  Switching to color standard mode, it only printed 1 1/2 columns before it stopped and spitted out.  No gstoraster failed error, but when I opened HP Device Manager (under more applications/printing), and clicked on printer and went to printer control tab, the printer had stopped.  I restarted printer, and it started printing, but then stopped in the same place.

With a regular document I type out in libreoffice, I don't have an issue.  Probably because it's black and white and wide enough margins.

I next tried a color webpage.  I went to pclinuxos.com like you suggested earlier, and I printed 1 page only on both drivers.  Gutenprint printed the whole page and had it in color.  Didn't print the background, but I see in print popup box where there is an option to do that if I want.  The only thing that happened is a tiny bit of the webpage info at the very top that is printed out was missing.

With cups, it was in black and white.  It printed only less than half the page before stopping and spitting out.  Did not have the gstoraster failed error message.

Lastly, tried opening that pdf in libreoffice, which opened it up in libre draw.  I had the same results that I did with the original ods in LO writer - with a pdf.

I measured the margins on my spreadsheet:  Left side is 7/16" from edge to where printing starts.  Right is 9/16", top is 5/16", and bottom is 1/4".

Is this a margin issue with cups, gutenprint, libreoffice, foxit, okular, or my printer?  Whatever it is, is there a way to find out what is the absolute minimum I can get away with and still get everything to print, or is it just trial and error?  Even with printing in libreoffice with a 3 1/4" margin on the right that was open space, I was having problems printing at times (see above).

Well, I've spent too much of my Saturday fussing with this.

Any thoughts?
