Printer error message - HP Officejet v40 - somewhat solved
« on: August 14, 2012, 03:08:44 PM »
I have an HP Officejet v40 installed.  Worked fine in the past, but over the last period of time (last few months?), I get an error pop-up in the lower right of my screen saying:

Quote
Missing printer driver:
It is not possible to install 'Hewlett-Packard Officejet V40' without the right driver

Quite often while I am sitting at my desk, this message pops up.  Once in a while when I am printing something out, it stops midway through the printing of the page.  I have to open up the HP Device Manager and under "printer control" tab, start the printer again to get the printing going and done.

Any suggestions to fix this?

I have seen that message here ....  have a HP printer also ....  but there has been no adverse effect on the printing.

I only see it when plugging in the printer.

I wonder if your printer is losing connection .......  does it go into standby mode or sleep or something like that, if unused for a while?

I have an HP printer, and have had that popup message for perhaps a year. I just ignore it.

I have mine set up via the PCC and also by hp-setup, each gives a slightly different result.

I tried to find a solution and these days just ignore the message, printer works fine.

Looked into further, and ran this in terminal:

hp-check -r

Initially had 3 errors:

1.  Checking for dependency: CUPS DDK - CUPS driver development kit...
warning: NOT FOUND! This is an OPTIONAL/RUNTIME ONLY dependency. Some HPLIP functionality may not function properly.

2.  OfficeJet_V40_fax
-----------------
Type: Fax
Device URI: hpfax:/usb/OfficeJet_V40?serial=MY24GD43HNWN
PPD: /etc/cups/ppd/OfficeJet_V40_fax.ppd
PPD Description: HP Fax hpcups
Printer status: printer OfficeJet_V40_fax is idle.  enabled since Sat 17 Mar 2012 06:40:29 PM CDT
error: Communication status: Failed

3.  'hpaio' in '/etc/sane.d/dll.conf'...
error: Not found. SANE backend 'hpaio' NOT properly setup (needs to be added to /etc/sane.d/dll.conf).

Looked in synaptic under hplip, and saw hplip-devel not installed, so installed with dependencies.  Ran hp-check -r again, and #2 no longer showed up as error, just 1 and 3.

For #1, checked synaptic, didn't see anything like what they were asking for.

For #2, my /etc/sane.d/dll.conf file does not have hpaio (or SANE) listed.   Should it?  Should I just add a line in that file and add the word hpaio?  Or is there another way to do?

Thanks!

In root konsole:

Code: [Select]
sane-find-scanner

What do you get?

Hi wedgetail:

This is what I get...

[MYNAME@localhost ~]$ sane-find-scanner

  # sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the
  # result is different from what you expected, first make sure your
  # scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer.

  # No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
  # you have loaded a kernel SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.

found USB scanner (vendor=0x04a9 [Canon], product=0x2206 [CanoScan], chip=LM9832/3) at libusb:002:004
  # Your USB scanner was (probably) detected. It may or may not be supported by
  # SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage.

  # Not checking for parallel port scanners.

Not sure on the SCSI thingy, but as asked under USB, I ran this:

[MYNAME@localhost ~]$ scanimage -L
device `plustek:libusb:002:004' is a Canon CanoScan N650U/N656U flatbed scanner
device `hpaio:/usb/OfficeJet_V40?serial=MY24GD43HNWN' is a Hewlett-Packard OfficeJet_V40 all-in-one
device `hpaio:/usb/OfficeJet_V40?serial=MY24GD43HNWN' is a Hewlett-Packard OfficeJet_V40 all-in-one

  # Most Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary ports
  # can't be detected by this program.

  # You may want to run this program as root to find all devices. Once you
  # found the scanner devices, be sure to adjust access permissions as
  # necessary.

You did not run the statement as root?  I am not sure if it matters but since it is also suggested by the response:

Quote
...................
  # You may want to run this program as root to find all devices. Once you
  # found the scanner devices, be sure to adjust access permissions as
  # necessary.

Just re-do the exercise

Code: [Select]
[root@localhost ~]# sane-find-scanner
I am running on a liveCD at the moment, but notice the # indicating that I am running in a root konsole.

Does look like you have two possible scanners, canon and hp.  I don know if it matters but what I suggest is try to start Xsane - Scanning from the menu and select the hp?  What happens.

I remember the last few days installing some printer upgrades, in history in synaptic it said:

Upgraded the following packages:
hplip (3.11.10-2pclos2011) to 3.12.6-1pclos2012
hplip-common (3.11.10-2pclos2011) to 3.12.6-1pclos2012
hplip-devel (3.11.10-2pclos2011) to 3.12.6-1pclos2012
hplip-gui (3.11.10-2pclos2011) to 3.12.6-1pclos2012
hplip-hpijs (3.11.10-2pclos2011) to 3.12.6-1pclos2012
hplip-libs (3.11.10-2pclos2011) to 3.12.6-1pclos2012
libsane-hpaio (3.11.10-2pclos2011) to 3.12.6-1pclos2012

Today, I tried to print for the first time since that upgrade (I think) and nothing happened.  I looked in PCC and did the troubleshooting and it said /usr/lib/cups/filter/gstoraster failed.  I looked that up in forum and saw where Tex said upgrade ghostwriter to someone else with an Epson, and I don't see any upgrades for ghostwriter in synaptic.  He also said to delete printer and reinstall.  I went into PCC and deleted my printer and fax with the HP printer.  Reinstalled the printer, but didn't know how to reinstall the HP fax...didn't see any options there.

I also noticed that previously, I had a gutenprint driver for this printer, I think the v5.2.7 simplified (not sure, deleted before writing down).  Now with deleting and reinstalling, it has the hpcups 3.12.6 installed.  When I check properties, it only has grayscale printing.  After rebooting, I printed out a simple one-page document (.doc) ok in black and white.  Checked print options, and only had grayscale to choose from.  Tried printing an .ods one page file, and didn't print.  The troubleshoot answer was gstoraster failed again.

rpm-4.8.1-5pclos2011  fully updated since I installed 2/12.  I updated kde to 4.8.3, also.

Where the heck did the "alot" come from?  I copied and pasted from history.  Supposed to be 3.11.10-2pclos2011 for all the upgrades that said "alot".  Built new computer in Feb 2012 and downloaded latest iso (I thought).

That is apparently due to the stupid set up on this forum where some combinations of letters and or numbers are replaced by whatever the admin thinks might be more suitable.

I guess it came back to bite!

I understand now what was wrong!

BTW, the only place I had seen the  hplip 3.12.6  rpm was in 64 bit which confused the issue even further.

Sorry to have wasted your time (and mine) because of this stupidity.

Well, I'm a little frustrated.  I gave up on the hplip driver and switched to cups+glutenprint v5.2.7 Simplified.  That's what I had before the synaptic upgrade of hplip.  Test printed color and grayscale, and they seem fine.  I tried cups+glutenprint v5.2.7 (not simplified) first, and the printer was stopping mid-copy and spitting out half-done.

If there are some other things I missed using hplip, let me know.

Thanks

With your normal printers turned on do following, from root konsole, and post result:

Code: [Select]
[root@KDE-mini gert]# lpstat -t
Then I will give you two specific statements to run in root konsole.

General:
Regarding the .alot you encountered, I believe you can ignore safely, the underlying decryption is fine. I do not think it has anything to do with your problem. It can be very annoying and confusing but just accept the small inconvenience.   As I understand there is a very good reason for the little hiccup.

The file you are having trouble with can I assume the problem is repeatable?  Is it text mixed with graphics?

Perhaps I should re-phrase this to: Do you have a file that will consistently fail if tested, which can be used as standard test file?
