Problem With Repos?
« on: August 14, 2012, 08:01:09 AM »
My update notifier gave me an error saying "An error occured verifying upgrade; please use Synaptic or try again later". So I waited, thinking it was just a temporary glitch, then opened Synpatic to check for updates. It gives me an error saying "http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/pclinuxos/apt/pclinuxos/2010/base/pkglist.kde4: 404 Not Found [IP: 193.1.193.64 80]". I click "ok", then another error appears saying "W: Release file did not contain checksum information for http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/pclinuxos/apt/pclinuxos/2010/base/pkglist.kde4". So, I decided to try another repo, & it appears that all of them are for the games. I've never seen this before. Here's a screen shot of my repos, so you can see what I see:

Why is this happening?
Why does it say 2010? This was a fresh installation of 2012.

You should NOT have them all checked. You should ONLY have ONE repo checked at a time (Exception is that you can also have the megagames one checked with another main packages repo)!!  Uncheck them all except the megagames and one other. Then try again.

Oh, I don't really have them all checked, I just did that for the screenshot so they'd be easier to see here ;)

OK-- They are not all for games, only the 1st line is "only" for games. The rest have games in them also. It says 2010 because that is the KDE you are using, remember we are a rolling release, so they only change the numbers when they do a major update. When you update to the latest KDE  4.8.3 they will then say 2012.
Not sure why they all have the 404. Normally means it is off line for a bit. Give it a couple hours and check again.

The problem the OP is getting was the same problem that I had yesterday. I saw in another post that changing kde4 in sections to kde will solve it. This is also the very thing that YouCanToo is saying isn't happening. He is telling people not to make that change. If you don't make that change you will continue to have that problem. This major change is painless because the dev team did a very nice job with scripts and notes about what happened and how to restore your old settings after the change.

Could this mean KDE 4.8.3 is being released? If it was already released, why hasn't Synaptic updated my system?

I'm confused.... should I do this or not? Where do I find these "notes"?

They come after the update. I have already successfully updated two systems. They are both running kde 4.8.3 now with now problems. I was only able to do that after I made the change in the repo window in sections. This major change will not miss up your system like the last one did several months ago.

Yes apparently yesterday evening because that is when I saw the same problem you are seeing now. But I found the post in another thread about changing kde4 to kde and the problem was solved. If you like keeping your system up-to-date then go for it you will not regret it.

All the repos have the section "games" there is nothing new or strange about that!

YouCanToo,

My OS was updated from kde 4.6.5 straight to kde 4.8.3 with nothing in between. There was no option other than that. While still running on kde 4.6.5 update-notifier said there were updates but when synaptic ran the reload to access the mirror and got an error on 3 different mirrors and got the same error on all 3, the next step was the forum. I found a solution and that was to change kde4 in sections in the repository setup to kde. Ran the reload then it worked with no error. I let it run its course and when finished I was no longer on 4.6.5 but was on 4.8.3. There wasn't any 4.6.6 through 4.8.2.

Probably the only ones running kde versions between 4.6.5 and 4.8.3 were/are testers and no one else. So your information was badly missing important information and totally useless to the majority of users.

Everyone running a stock up-to-date non test OS is going to have the same problem that I and others have had until they know they have to change kde4 to kde in sections in repository setup in synaptic. If this isn't changed you will be stuck on kde 4.6.5. update-notifier will tell you that there are updates but the repo will cause an error every time you click reload.

This is why I have been coming back hard on what you are saying about this. Stop confusing people.

The easiest way to check the mirrors if they are synced!

As example the nluug mirror:

Check: http://ftp.nluug.nl/ibiblio/distributions/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/apt/pclinuxos/2010/
check the date from the  /base folder
If the date older then the other updated folders then is the mirror not fully synced.

Check: http://ftp.nluug.nl/ibiblio/distributions/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/apt/pclinuxos/2010/base/
You can see here the basegen did work correctly.

I FTPed into the main repo to look around. The mirrors will have the same thing that is in the main repo. pkglist.kde4.bz2 is not there anymore. Not under the 2010 or 2011 folders. So just as I said if anyone runs reload in synaptic they will get an error message about pkglist.kde4 is missing because it is. It does not exist in the repo anymore. So just as I said you cannot update your OS unless you change your repo mirror setting in sections from kde4 to kde. It has nothing to do with waiting for the mirrors to sync with the main server.

What is so hard to understand about that? Why is the person responsible for changing the file in the repo not speaking up and confirming what I have already said multiple times?
