These are the messages I got when I tried to install gimp and a related package earlier today:

Quote
gimp:
 Depends: libgegl0.2_0 (>=0.2.0) but it is not installable
 Depends: pango (>= 1.29.4)
 Depends: gtk+2.0 (>= 2.24.10)
 Depends: libgegl-0.2.so.0  but it is not installable

gutenprint-gimp2:
 Depends: gimp (>= 2.2.7-2mdk)

Gimp used to be required because it provided files needed by other applications.  I gather that is no longer the case?

Today's update wants to remove gimp?
« Reply #16 on: August 17, 2012, 02:53:55 AM »
In PASS repo, I get these messages:
Quote
gimp:
 Afhankelijk: pango (>= 1.29.4)
 Afhankelijk: gtk+2.0 (>= 2.24.10)

Quote
gutenprint-gimp2:
 Afhankelijk: gimp (>= 2.2.7-2mdk)

Quote
task-printing:
 Afhankelijk: gutenprint-gimp2

Quote
task-printing-scanning:
 Afhankelijk: task-printing

So, I think if that GIMP thing is solved, all other things will go well (yes I removed gimp yesterday to be able to update to KDE 4.8.3)... and GIMP is at 2.8 in PASS (I wanted to test it now)....
=> but it's already better than yesterday (that libgegl-thing is solved already  :))

EDIT: I just did a reload, and full update...

Gimp needs up-to-date pango (current version 1.28.x) and gtk+2.0 (current 2.24.5.x)

EDIT: both still in testing as far as I can see  ;)

I had a gimp problem with pango and gtk-2.0 dependencies.   My solution was to change repos to heanet and install pango and gtk-2.0, then go back to the PASS server and install gimp 2.8.
pango and gtk are older versions on PASS right now.
If it ain't broke, DON'T fix it!  If ya cain't fix it, ya gotta stand it.  If ya cain't stand it..............Visit the forum and search.

OK, thanks for the info - I'll try that route  :)

On normal heanet repo, it's also not available (old versions of the two packages)...
=> only in testing part, there are the recent versions....

So PASS doesn't have "older" versions (it even has Gimp 2.8 at the moment), the more recent ones (pango and gtk+2.0) are just not "official" yet  ;)

That was short lived. While Gimp 2.8 generally up and running, bits of python are missing, no python console, some of my more useful python plugins not working.

So back to Gimp 2.6.12, still nice to know that 2.8 is nearly there. Probably the heanet.ie mirror is not quite updated.

It would be better, if you told us which plugins. How do you expect we'll get them fixed, if we do not know which they are?
And what bits of python are missing? Python is whole/complete here, else too many apps to name would cease to work. Explain exactly what you mean.

Making such statements without providing the information to explain them gives no one any clues as to what might be wrong.

Did you open synaptic, hit reload, then hit Search-- type in gimp and look at all the plugins that are there to install separately. Are any of those what you are missing?

I will try and give as much info as possible, but I have reverted to a post-kde4.8 image where everything is up-to-date apart from the recent Gimp 2.8 packages. This is using the heanet.ie mirror.

From what I experienced, as in my previous post, what was missing is the gimp python console, (at the bottom of the filters menu). I am assuming that this had a knock on effect and some additional gimp python plugins such as GURM, GAT-tools, python-brush manager, not only not working, but not loaded (not in the help -> plugin-browser)

For reference some screenshots from another machine, also up to date, including the Gimp updates.
 This one had gimp 2.8RC1 already installed using AndrzejL's script. All is working here,
Looks like the gimp update went on top of the existing files.
this is the screenshot http://i.imgur.com/fcgb7.jpg of the bits missing on my regular machine.

If your Gimp 2.8.0 has the python console entry, then I will have to do a bit of digging, otherwise;
I will do what I normally do in such circumstances, wait a couple of days & try again. Thanks for your interest.

Just checked and the repo version was packaged without python-enabled. There must be a reason why it wasn't enabled when it was built.

EDIT:
Repackaged and sent to Dropbox.

Refreshed synaptic (heanet.ie mirror) and the gimp package gone from 2.8.0-2 to 2.8.0-3

Updated all the remaining "available for update" packages and Gimp (and python) working fine.

Once again thank you all very much.

Updated ...   menubar now has   Python-Fu   entry ......  clicking on it gives a mostly greyed-out list ........  BUT the language in that drop-down appears to be Spanish or such.  Odd.
