Icon sets implementation and memory usage
« on: August 15, 2012, 06:43:33 AM »
noticed in another lxde distro I was installing for a friend that it was using much less VM in lxtask  where it showed pcmanfm using 56MB VM  our lxde showed 110MB VM  etc.  then I installed oxigen icon theme in her lappy and shifted to it.. VM tripled ??  so I went about testing all the icon sets I have installed and no noticeable change..

today I did an update and ran into the kde4 problem with the repo .. fixed that and updated, one of those was to the oxigen icon set which showed some error.. after that I switched to it and lxtask showed such a change in VM that I sat here stunned for a while.. the only negative is that gnome games is not showing the icons .. so far that's the only package not showing icons ..

so I'm guessing the implementation of the icon sets has a huge affect on the memory usage ??

Probably the buffer size it would require to ... well, make an inventory of the iconset? Oxygen is the biggest mutha there is and squeezing all those 16x16, 24x24 32x32, etc on buffer will certainly max the mem out. I'm not sure on LXDE but it certainly is hardcoded and a requirement for KDE builds.

should mention that it changed for the better.. memory usage is so low now that its crazy .. of course if I start using the apps memory increases .. but nothing like before.. right now pcmanfm is only at 76MB lxpanel 38MB ?? crazy low ram usage .. 8)

Buffered and swapped?

Buffered and swapped?

total memory use after boot was 273MB and boot time is 3.7seconds faster now?  pcmanfm starts out with 56MB VM and lxpanel at 36MB VM

I never show cache as unused .. when using low memory (1GB) of ram I like to monitor total ram used .. helps me see what is not a good combo to run ..and what apps not to run at the same time ..
