[solved]which version PCLOS am I running? & FF updates
« on: August 07, 2012, 03:37:29 PM »
I thought I had installed LXDE Mini 12.06.  The repos indicate I'm drawing pkgs from PCLOS2010.
Is there a command I can type in the terminal that will tell me what I got?

FireFox updates, the JRE plugin says I'm out of date.  I'm running 1.6.0_33, synaptic does not have a later update.  Should I risk installing the Java Runtime Engine pkg update from the Java website?  I think it's 7u5.

cat /etc/version should return a value of 2012 1 PCLinuxOS.

FireFox updates, the JRE plugin says I'm out of date.

Current Java plugin I'm seeing in Firefox 14.0.1 is 1.6.0_33. Where are you seeing an "out of date" message?

Bare metal                           VBox
AMD Athlon 7750 Dual-Core    Single core
4GiB RAM                              1GiB RAM
nVidia GeForce FX 5200          64MB video
LXDE 32bit                            KDE 64bit

yonnie, did you do a "full update" immediately after the installation?

If you did, (which you are required to do for a proper install),  you are simply "Current".

There is no valid "Current" release if you are "up to date".

It is simply called "Current or Updated".

The version numbers simply indicate "when" the last "Current .ISO" was published for installation.

A "current release" is simply a copy of an install, completely updated as of the time of its release.

So, knowing what version of PCLinuxOS you have installed becomes irrelevant when you are talking about an "up to date install".

If it has been updated, it is "current"  ;)

I installed two of my PCLinuxOS operating systems (LXDE) more that two years ago, and they are both "current" ;)

Thanks, I'm running current version 2012 1 PClinuxOS.  Great!  And yes, I did a full update after install.

The add-ons manager for Fire Fox where it says check to see if your add-ons are up to date.  That screen reports that Java 1.6.0_33 is an outdated version and gives me a radio button to go to the java site and download a current version.  I think that was java 7u5.

What would be the correct way to install it, or should I wait for it to appear in Synaptic?

Wait for repos

About sections of repo, devs doesn't change those things because makes things complicated on a rolling release distro

I completely disable my Firefox Java plugin as it can be a security risk, and you may be surprised how few sites actually need it.

The only Firefox Plugin I currently have enabled is Shockwave Flash 11.2.xxx and I don't encounter any problems on the sites I visit but of course YMMV
