HP Printer stops in mid document
« on: August 12, 2012, 09:30:11 AM »
MY printer is an HP 810c and tests in troubleshooter as OK.
My Laptop is a Dell 620 fully updated system wise and Libre Office.
I have 2 Gig RAM so plenty of storge. Running 2.0 dual core.

Problem:  Randomly... not EVERY document. May be two pages or 30 pages, the  printer stops printing mid-page, whole system including laptop locks up requiring holding down power key to shut off and reboot.

Upon reboot, immediately printer spits out unfinished page, usually prints page of garbage, and starts printing doc from beginning.  If I shut off  printer, cancel doc in que, sometimes printer still wants to print entire doccument, sometimes I can click to  print missing pages in LibreOffice.

I don't know if hang up is caused by printer or something in laptop.

Frustrating.... newlife

Not sure, seems odd. There have been several postings where weird things happen, and the users /tmp permissions have been changed to root.

In konsole >ls -l and have a look at /tmp. If wrong permissions change and see if that is it.

Permissions is OK....

Is there a log kept anywhere that might indicate where a problem is occuring? With the printer or the OS?

I have installed the latest version of Libre Office. Printed 17 pages and in the middle of the last page, everything froze up, leaving the only option being to hold power off until all shut down.

Makes me think about a memory problem. Either printer, laptop or both. Hard to tell but I would try to check on this first. Checking laptop is easy (memtest) but the printer might be a job for (in)famous HP support.

Depending on how familiar you are with CUPS there is a good log, click on following, it should show the CUPS printers Admin page:

http://localhost:631/admin/

On the right hand side you will see amongst other two small fields:

Edit Configuration File

View Error Log

You may be able to go directly to the error log by clicking on following:

http://localhost:631/admin/log/error_log?

The error log is likely set to warning level:  warn, this level is set at the top of Edit Configuration File and you change this to debug

Then there will be quite in depth items printed in the error log.

The interpretation does require a good understanding of CUPS operation but you may be able to figure something.

When finished remember to set the debug level back to warn

That is seriously risky. A word to the wise. When your system becomes that unresponsive better to raise the skinny elephant, that will save a whole heap of unimaginable trouble.

Raising Skinny Elephants Is Utterly Boring

Using the Left Alt key:
Code: [Select]
Alt+SysRq+r
Alt+SysRq+s
Alt+SysRq+e
Alt+SysRq+i
Alt+SysRq+u
Alt+SysRq+b

That will bring your recalcitrant system safely back to conciousness.

Mine also randomly stops in mid-page, but it doesn't freeze up my desktop...
