Linux Format cover dvds October 2012
« on: August 11, 2012, 06:22:28 PM »
Please move this if it's in the wrong place - I couldn't decide where to put it:

I was playing with this month's cover disc from the LXF magazine, and tried to load the PCLOS live version, just curiosity mind - I already have a working install.
Everything worked.... EXCEPT "printer installation" - the icon in control panel doesn't seem to be 'live'. I've tried it on two different machines, same result.

Have they got a faulty iso, or have I just got a faulty disc? If the former it won't do Pclos much good.

Did they use, unaltered, the official ISO?
Quite a lot of mags don't.

Have you tried doing an MD5sum on what they provide
and comparing it with an official ISO?

I bought the edition of LXF magazine, personally; it's rubbish, the DVD with PCLinuxOS: a great coaster.
I ramble on more...

Edit: This is the spiel on DVD 2 on running the Live DVD and selecting to launch PCLinuxOS. No idea as yet what version, but will get to that later, when I reboot.

PCLinuxOS

PCLinuxOS started life as a set of extra packages for Mandrake, but became a distribution in its own right. The goal of this distro is ease of use, and it achieved this through a well set up KDE desktop.

We found that after installing, some of the applications that appeared in the menu, weren't actually installed. Any missing software can be installed via the Package Manager (under Software Center in the PC menu). ::)  ???  >:(

This distro can be run directly from the DVD.
Reboot from the DVD and select PCLinuxOS from the boot menu
