Installing Linux on nrw Asus laptop X54C
« on: August 11, 2012, 05:06:50 AM »
Hi,  I have tried installing PC Linux KDE 2012-02 but the install stops after about 5 minutes. Have been able to install the 64 bit version but have no sound although the video works and no control over the grub menu so not able to swop to windows.

Any ideas please

Hi alaint, welcome to the forum.

If you haven't already done so, you could check you got a good download and could also do an md5sum check against the iso.

cannot select between Linux and Windows in the Grub.
Hi George,
Try Configure my Computer > Boot > Set up boot system and change "Bootloader to use" from "GRUB with graphical menu" to "GRUB with text menu.

Is the keyboard active at the Grub page?

Is it a USB keyboard? If so check the BIOS settings for something that will allow BIOS to control it, not the OS.
That might get the keyboard working during Grub boot page ...........  IF that is the problem.

O.K. two separate problems:
First:
Quote
I have tried installing PC Linux KDE 2012-02 but the install stops after about 5 minutes.

What happens when the installation stops?
Is there anything displayed on the screen?  If so what was the last message.
Is there a blank screen?  If so try selecting "Video safe mode" from the LiveCD menu.  If that works you should then be able to set up the video card in PCC.

Second:
Quote
Have been able to install the 64 bit version but have no sound although the video works and no control over the grub menu so not able to swop to windows.
If pressing the "num lock" key turns the appropriate LED on and off, then BIOS has control of the keyboard.  It's possible that the keyboard has a funny layout and the up/down arrows are being read incorrectly.  Do "Page Up" and "Page Down" have any effect?
Did you do the md5sum check?  If you downloaded the iso on a linux machine you can find the checksum in a terminal with:
md5sum path/filename

Hope some of that may help.

Russell.

Have you checked that you got a good download?

Check the md5sum of the downloaded file against the number provided on the download site.

If they differ then you need to get a good download.

Configuring sound sometimes has to be manually done, sets to zero
on my machine usually resulting in no sound.   The configuration
menu should lead you to audio settings.    No problem.

Have you been able to install to a fixed partition from the iso ?    Using
default settings (adding to a previous install) should configure grub to
recognize everything from the previous install to the new install.   Be
mindful you see everything there.

Have a good one.

Do you mean this one?

I get this message when running the liveCD on my desktop machine but it doesn't seem to affect anything (at least that I've found).

Regarding the sound problem, if it works on the LiveCD and not on the install you can check what driver is being used by the LiveCD by going to:
Configure Your Computer > Hardware > Sound Configuration
This will give you the name of the driver being used.  You can then try the same on the installed version and see if it is using the same driver.  If it's not the same one you can go to Advanced > Let me pick any Driver and then find the driver in the list.

I am pleased to report that with the help of my good friend Russell I have been able to solve most of my problems. The Grub problem was due to my having fitted an external mouse. With this removed the Grub operates normally. The sound problem was solved by moving the Speaker channel adjustment to the mixer panel, this now fine. The microphone is working but not 100% guess, like the rest of the problems its largely 'finger trouble' but I still can't use Audacity - no mic found - any ideas

Thanks for your support

Hi,

Try moving the "master" adjustment to the mixer panel or panel icon.   You
might just be changing the speaker level from the panel sounds like.  Turn up the
mic almost 100% from the internal mixer.
