Problem with Wireless
« on: August 06, 2012, 02:28:11 PM »
The wireless is setup and works, but it continues to drop off/lose connection and the PC is only about 6 feet away from the wireless router. It is so bad that I now keep Network Center up just to be able to quickly reconnect.

Card is a D-Link and uses a Broadcom driver.

If eth0 works I'd give a call to your ISP, which is ?

Mine connected, stays connected.   They might
be working on upgrading equipment in your area,
believe it or not, causing connection problems.

But try eth0 first, then we can see if a wlan0 problem
exists or not.

does it loose connection even when you are using the internet or when it becomes idle for a while?

we will need more info about your hardware,

what do these commands give you?

ifconfig

iwconfig

uname -r

quality is 70/70 and its still dropping connection, thats odd.

can you update the kernel, you are using a relatively old kernel, the latest one may have a solution to the problem you are having.

just start synaptic, search for "kernel" and then install version "3.2.18-pclos2.bfs", when you are done installing it, restart your computer and boot up using it and check if the problem is still there.

Updated the Kernel as you suggested and changed the DNS to Google Public DNS and still no change.

I have a similar problem. I've not encountered it before, but there are a lot of wifi routers in my neighborhood that appear to put out a stronger signal than the one in my living room. Is this problem on a new installation or did it just start happening on an existing install?

This was a reinstall after corrupting an older install of PSLinuxOS. I am not sure what I did, more than likely there were conflicting network programs and I finally made changes to all of them,  but the issue just went away over time. I'm guessing the "Manage Wireless Network" when you right click on the network icon in the status bar is not the same program as Network Center.
