WebCam Software tests
« on: February 15, 2013, 09:41:30 AM »
One UVC compliant webcam attached.
Tried a few webcam applications to see what is working and what not.
Here are the results of tests on my machine ....  updated KDE ...

camorama ....  pop-up says ... "Could not connect to video source (/dev/video0) Please check connection.

cheese .....  launches OK

kamerka ... launches OK

guvcview ...  launches OK ....  excellent controls; does video and audio combined, as well as pics.

xcam ...     launches OK;  once the scan mode is changed to colour it displays OK.

kamoso ...  could not install it ..  depends on libkipi.so.8 which is not installable. Apparently it needs to be rebuilt against the latest  libkipi.  This does video as well as pics.

vlc ....  launches and displays the camera; has a recording function.

WebcamStudio .....  I did not figure out how to get this to take the webcam input and display it  :D

Did I miss any?

So, to the question .......  is anyone else able to use camorama?

EDIT - I opened a thread on camorama specifically.

Maybe the problem is here ....

Since you've been so helpful to me here's my tuppence worth...

guvcview - same as you and seems quite promising.

lkamerka - ok but limited usefulness

vlc - seems fine

camorama - installed just to find out but with same result as yourself

but one you didn't mention

PiTiVi - description seemed promising but wouldn't launch (subject of an earlier post http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,113002.0.html

Thank you for checking ....  appreciate it  ;)

As Pitivi is a video editor (and there are a number of others in the repo) I did not include it.

64bit-rc1

only tried:
kamerka - fine
guvcview - launches; identifies webcam correctly; black preview screen; captures video and screencap blindly - meaning I can save and view the video and screen captures on relevant applications

edit: fixed the black preview screen by changing the camera output to anything but mjpg. Don't know why that would be.
