WiFi led blinking problem
« on: August 06, 2012, 06:38:57 AM »
Hello all!

I have installed "PCLinuxOS Lxde Mini" on my Hp Pavilion g6.
Now I have troubles with the key to activate WiFi (in my laptop this key, with a led, is F12) because the led which signals if WiFi is on or off is still blinking, although the WiFi works correctly.

You have given us some good information:

System:     Hewlett-Packard Pavilion g6 laptop.
OS:           PCLinuxOS LXDE Mini (which release?  2012.02? What?)
Symptom:  WiFi status LED blinks while WiFi "works correctly".

Some suggestions for more information which will be helpful in diagnosing your problem:

  • As mentioned already, the release of PCLinuxOS LXDE Mini you are using, and its update status (has it been fully updated via Synaptic?).
  • Your system's CPU (the Pavilion g6 family appears to have any of several Intel or AMD CPU models available).
  • Your system's RAM complement.
  • The type WiFi adapter you are using (Atheros, intel, Broadcom or whatever, and what model number is it?)

Does your system documentation give any clues as to what a blinking LED might signify?  (This may be a normal indication of throughput on the adapter) or have you observed it operating on its supplied operating system and seen something different than you are now seeing?

When you say it's "working normally" does that mean you are able to connect to your wireless network with it and achieve reasonable data rates?

In general, the more details about your system and situation, the better.

Let's see if we can't figure this one out.

Later On,

it looks like the g6 uses the Ralink 2011 802.11 b/g/n WiFi Adapter

Many thanks "horusfalcon".

  • "YouCanToo" (many thanks to you, too) is right, my WiFi adapter is a Ralink 2011 802.11 b/g/n.
  • I don't know exactly my release number, but I downloaded it last week and, yes, it has been fully updated (last update was yesterday).
  • My g6 has an Intel i5 cpu model.
  • Mine is a 64bit system, with 6GB ram, but I installed PCLOS 32bit version, because I know 64bit versions are testing versions
  • When I say it's "working normally" I mean, yes, I'm able to connect to my wireless network and achieve reasonable data rates.

My WiFi adapter seems working with no problems, except the blinking led, which is not a normal indication of anything. This LED must be either RED (WiFi disabled) or BLUE (WiFi enabled).

Cheers

Hmm... just getting back to this thread.

It seems like the blinking LED is a minor annoyance, then?  It still seems, from your description of the symptoms, that the driver may be using the LED as a throughput indicator.  Is it blinking steadily, or does the pace of blinking correlate with periods of network activity (e.g., send/receive)?

If it's blinking steadily at a more or less constant rate, then I'm wrong.  In any case, until the issue with the driver is sorted out, this will continue to be a problem.  Maybe a bit of black tape over the LED?  (I'm only half-kidding here... it may be the cheapest way around the problem.)

Here's an idea:  Open the PCLinuxOS Control Center, click on Hardware on the menu at left, then click on Browse And Configure Hardware and navigate to your Wifi adapter.  (It'll be listed under Ethernetcard).  The Identification section displayed at the top will give the particulars of how the system identifies your card.  Perhaps it has been misidentified?  In the Misc section a listing will be given for module.  Mine says "wl".  I'm thinking that's a kernel module supporting wireless LAN cards in general?  (I could be wrong, though.)

Basically, let's try to gather some more info on this situation.  I gotta get ready for work, so I'll check back...
