Issues with Epson Artisan 837 printer
« on: August 04, 2012, 10:17:35 AM »
Hi there, I'm having some issues getting an Epson Artisan 837 All-in-one to work properly. To make a long story short, I'm familiar with Mac OS and Windows, but I don't really have any experience with linux. I'm trying to get this printer set up for my grandparent's but their computer is running PCLinux2010, and I'm not sure how to troubleshoot it at this point.

I've gone to the PCC and tried to autodetect the printer. For some reason when doing this, it says that the printer is using Parallel Port 0. The other problem is that the Artisan 837 isn't listed in the Epson models, it only lists earlier models in the series. If I delete the printer settings, and then turn the printer off and back on, it auto detects without having to run the scan and it shows up that it's connected by USB (which is probably good since that is how it's connected). However, the Artisan 837 model still isn't listed, and it won't print when I try to print a test page. I tried to created a text document and print that to see if it would work. When I do so, the print option is blocked out because it says that the printer is "rejecting jobs".

As I'm not familiar with PCLinuxOS, is the fact that the 837 isn't listed causing the problem? If so, how can I get some drivers for it to make it work? If that's not the case, what else might be causing the problem? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi nabeshin,

Welcome, and in the words of the book "Don't Panic". Some hardware can be a pain.

I do not have a definitive answer, just some pointers. Likely someone will know.

Is the machine up to date via synaptic?
CARE - ideally it has been updated regularly. If it has not been may be too old to update (rolling release demands regular updates)
If not regularly updated maybe just apply drivers, and then back up the system and files before trying a full update.

Are the epson packages installed, eg task-printing-epson (and maybe sane)

Is the printer plugged in and powered on?

Re-try PCC Control Centre. Bin anything previously done, try again.

If this does not work then to Firefox (or whatever you choose to use) and in the address bar

localhost:631

You are now looking at the cups printing system, web interface. You will need to switch into root to try to add the printer.

Still no luck?

I found these two items:

http://www.openprinting.org/printer/Epson/Epson-Artisan_837_Series

http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?cookies=no&oid=182960&infoType=Downloads&com.broadvision.session.new=Yes

Openprinting says "works Perfectly".

If you need to install drivers always take care when doing so from outside synaptic, and read the install instructions.

Maybe wait for a definative answer, should be easy to fix.
