It has been reported that Iron-Browser is essentially a copy of Chrome/Chromium with different default settings and some references removed, and then presented as something different.

My own view is that it should be purged from the PCLinuxOS repository, and maybe a sticky thread added to advise users how they can set up Chromium with the same settings as the default Iron-Browser.

So I vote, No.

Voted "no".

Maybe we can write simple script that will change chromium settings to iron settings and add it to repo.

Agreed, and there is very little work involved to use the same settings in Chromium. From Wikipedia:

While Iron does not provide extra privacy compared to Chromium, it does implement some additional features that distinguish it from Google Chrome, such as built-in ad blocking.
And AdBlock works just fine for me.

The first time I used it, it seemed very fast, but since then I've decided that the first time you use any browser, it's always way faster than it is after countless hours spent piling up garbage files...

Instead of exercising my right to vote, I opted not to because of my bias towards the browser. I'm sure there are still good in it (if any at all) that I am too blinded by its betrayal to see.

I thought of voting no just to give it a fighting chance ... but the outcome is obvious.

I voted "no", of course, but as Agent Smith already has built an updated package (before having read Texstar's original post) I see no great harm in making it available in the repository. Agent Smith has no doubt invested time and effort in creating the package and might understandably want someone else to try it out too. I won't though.

Really ridiculous is keeping an obsolete version in the repo instead of either updating it or killing it.

An alternative way for Agent Smith to make the package available is through a linked download. He can store it on the cloud and provide a link (probably with instructions and a list of dependencies). The whole point IMO is not to tolerate such a scam in Open Source. It is an embarrassment to lay such a claim of enhancement when anyone with a Google Chrome should be able to do the same. And for what? A redirection to the site so he can make money? That is low down.

How about pulling it off the repositories then?

Another no here.

I used to regularly install Iron, but had noticed that there was really no practical difference between it and Chromium even before Texstar gave that heads up about the scam the author was running.

On my Windows installs I used to install Iron just because there aren't binaries for Chromium available, and continued to run Iron on Windows for another few months after I purged it from my Linux installs.  Now the Windows installs want to use something other than Google for searching, redirect away from the Chrome App store, and Iron just generally feels like a hijacked browser.

I found that Comodo has their own repackaged version of Chromium, this one with actual extra features, and now my Windows installs run that instead of Iron.

I'm going to vote to purge Iron from the repos entirely - from my recent contact with the browser, it seems even worse than it used to be and I don't trust it.

Here's a link to a story about Iron, although it doesn't mention the issues I have personally seen on the Windows version:
